Estreou recentemente na Secção Cinéfondation do festival de Cannes de 2019 a curta "The Favourites", uma curta de Martin Monk que conta a história de Sofia, uma jovem problemática que, após discutir com a mãe, parte numa jornada com um estranho para tentar encontrar o seu pai. O Portal Cinema teve a oportunidade de ver esta Curta e de entrevistar Martin Monk, com quem trocamos algumas opiniões sobre este seu projeto bastante interessante que explora, de uma forma direta mas subtil, o tema de pais ausentes e as questões que rodeiam este tema tão complexo mas tão presente. Habilmente filmado e com uma atuação de nível de Lia Wilfing, "The Favourite" destacou-se como um dos melhores trabalhos da Secção Cinéfondation, tendo sido muito bem recebido por todos os que o virão.
The short film "The Favourites" recently debuted in the Cinéfondation Section of the Cannes Film Festival. It's a short film by Martin Monk that tells the story of Sofia, a troubled young woman who, after arguing with her mother, goes on a journey with a stranger to try to find her long lost father. Portal Cinema had the opportunity to see this Short and to interview the director Martin Monk, with whom we exchanged some opinions regarding this very interesting project that explores, in a direct but subtle way, the theme of absent parents and all the issues that surround this theme so complex but so current. Skillfully filmed and with a strong performance by young actress Lia Wilfing, "The Favorites" stood out as one of the best works of the Cinéfondation Section, having been very well received by all who came to see it.

PC – O que te levou a criar "Favourites"? Qual foi o seu plano inicial para o filme e como surgiu o tema “pais ausentes”?/ What led you to create “Favourites”? What was your initial plan for the film and how did the theme of “absent fathers” developed?
Martin Monk (MM) -"Favourites“ was the first film project that I did for my M.A. Directing degree in Vienna. I had moved there to study, and was searching for a topic. I wanted to use that feeling of moving somewhere new, that restlessness and the sense of leaving your old life behind, and somehow express it in a film. First, I thought about the road movie genre and then quickly started having more ideas about potential characters. Looking for your father that you never got to meet seemed like a powerful and deep motivation, but also a really complex psychological topic. I researched into that topic, speaking with a family therapist, and realised that I should try and talk about this topic by proxy, so i went through the plan of envision an encounter with a complete stranger. I then met the actress, Lia Wilfing, by chance in a casting and it all came together in front of my mind.
"Favourites" foi o primeiro projeto de filme que fiz para o meu curso de MA Directing em Viena. Tinha-me mudado para estudar e estava à procura de um tópico. Queria aproveitar esse sentimento de mudar para algum sitio novo, aquela inquietação e o sentido de deixares a tua antiga vida para trás e de alguma forma conseguires expressar isso num filme. Primeiro, pensei no género de road movie e rapidamente comecei a ter mais ideias sobre personagens com potencial. E foi aí que cheguei ao conceito da procura pelo pai que nunca se conheceu e este tema parecia ter uma poderosa motivação, mas também tinha potencial para ser um tópico psicológicamente complexo. Fiz várias pesquisas sobre esse tópico, falando até com um terapeuta familiar, e rapidamente percebi que deveria tentar falar sobre este tópico por procuração, ou seja, deveria imaginar um encontro com estranhos com este tema como pano de fundo. Posteriormente conheci a Lia Wilfing, a protagonista, e a partir daí tudo acabou por se juntar na minha cabeça.
PC - Diga-nos o que espera que o público sinta quando vir este filme? Qual é a maior lição que ele nos proporciona? / Tell us what do you expect the audience to feel when watching this film? What’s the major lesson of the film?
MM - I am skeptical of films as concrete life lessons. It should never be preachy, or patronising, but rather, it should be true. In that sense, there’s no single critical message or takeaway from the film that I could wrap into a statement. But of course, the audience should feel something, they should care about the characters and be intrigued by getting to know them. Step by step, both of them reveal themselves. If the viewer can perhaps recognise themselves in this process, it would be a big achievement.
Sou cético em relação aos filmes como lições concretas de vida. Nunca devem ser uma proposta de moralidade ou paternalista, mas devem ser realistas. Nesse sentido, não há uma única mensagem crítica ou takeaway do filme que eu possa incluir em uma declaração. Mas é claro, o público deve sempre sentir alguma coisa, deve se preocupar com os personagens e ficar intrigado por conhecê-los. No filme, por exemplo, os dois protagonistas revelam-se. Se o espectador puder se reconhecer nesse processo, já seria uma grande conquista.
PC – Como descreve "The Favourites" numa única frase?/ How do you describe “Favourites” in a single sentence?
MM - Dois estranhos num carro, fingindo sem sucesso não se importar com nada.
PC - "Favourites" foi recentemente selecionado para o Festival de Cinema de Cannes. Como é que Cannes reagiu a este filme e será capaz de vê-lo em outros grandes festivais de cinema? / “Favourites” was recently selected for the Cannes Film Festival. How did Cannes reacted to this Film and will wee be able to see it in other major film festivals?
MM - It was an amazing experience in Cannes - the film was well received and I hugely enjoyed meeting the other film makers in the Cinéfondation selection. It was a personal dream come true. The film will indeed screen at further renowned festivals, but unfortunately I can’t disclose yet which ones exactly. The festival journey for „Favourites“ has only just begun.
Foi uma experiência incrível! O filme foi bem recebido e gostei muito de conhecer os outros cineastas na seleção da Cinéfondation. Foi um sonho que se tornou realidade. O filme, de facto, será exibido em outros festivais renomados, mas infelizmente não posso divulgar quais exatamente. A jornada do festival para "The Favourites" está apenas a começar.
PC - Qual é o próximo passo para a sua carreira? O que podemos esperar de Martin Monk no futuro próximo?/ What’s next for your career? What can we expect from Martin Monk in the near future?
MM - A feature film script is in the works as well as another short film to complete my M.A. Directing degree. I hope to create more work in a shorter space of time, and am very excited about the next projects.
Um argumento de longa-metragem está em andamento, bem como outra curta-metragem para completar o meu diploma de M.A. Directing. Espero criar mais trabalho num curto espaço de tempo, e estou muito animado com os próximos projetos.
