Durante o FantasPorto 2018, o Portal Cinema teve a oportunidade de entrevistar Maurice Haeems (Diretor) e Jay Sitaram (Produtor)! Nós conversamos um pouco com eles sobre o seu novo projeto “Chimera” (Crítica), filme esse que achamos muito interessante!
O primeiro tópico que discutimos foi como “Chimera” veio a ser criado. Tanto Haeems quanto Sitaram são fãs de ficção científica, então não é de admirar que ambos decidiram estrear-se na indústria cinematográfica com um filme de ficção científica. É isso mesmo! "Chimera" é o primeiro longa-metragem de Haeems e Sitaram! Se acha que estamos a falar de dois jovens que acabaram de terminar a escola de cinema, então você está errado. São dois homens de meia idade crescidos com respectivas famílias que deixaram os seus empregos para perseguirem o seu sonho de singrar no complexo negócio de filmes. É uma ótima história e, de acordo com Haeems, não foi uma decisão difícil para ambos deixar tudo para trás e dedicar tempo a "Chimera". Assumindo o papel de diretor, Haeems contou-nos tudo sobre sua a experiência com direção: “Eu não andei na Escola de Cinema e tudo o que sei sobre Realizar um Filme é o que eu aprendi por mim mesmo e por ser um devoto fã de cinema! ” O mesmo aplica-se ao seu parceiro no crime! Com formação em Finanças, Sitaram assumiu o papel de produtor e, de acordo com Haeems, ele “foi perfeito, porque conseguiu encontrar as melhores ofertas, os melhores locais e manteve o filme no orçamento”.
During FantasPorto 2018, Portal Cinema had the opportunity to interview Maurice Haeems (Director) and Jay Sitaram (Producer)! We’ve talked a little with them about their new project “Chimera” (Full Review) which we found very interesting!
The first topic we discussed was how “Chimera” came to be. Both Haeems and Sitaram are die-hard fans of science fiction, so no wonder they both decided to debut in the movie industry with a sci-fi film. That’s right, “Chimera” is Haeems and Sitaram first feature film! If you think we are talking about two youngsters that just finished film school, then you are wrong. They are two grown middle-aged men with respective families that left their jobs to pursue their dream of making it in the brutal film business. It’s a great story and, acording to Haeems, it wasn’t a difficult decision for them leave it all behind and devote time to “Chimera”. Taking the role of film director, Haeems told us all about his experience with directing: “I didn’t go to Film School and all I know of Directing a Film is what I’ve learned for myself and from being a devote filmgoer!” The same goes for his partner in crime! With a background in Finance, Sitaram assumed the role of producer, and according to Haeems, he “was perfect, because he could find the best deals, the best locations and kept the film on the budget”.
Mas o que levou estes dois homens a embarcar nesta experiência? “A paixão pelos filmes de ficção científica e o desejo de criar o nosso próprio filme”. Com essa ambição em mente, Haeems e Sitaram embarcaram na jornada e criaram o argumento de “Chimera”, um filme onde acompanhamos um cientista brilhante mas perturbado que congela os seus filhos vivos para deter a progressão da sua doença genética mortal, enquanto ele corre contra o tempo para desvendar os segredos da imortalidade codificados no DNA de uma Alforreca.
Depois de terminarem o argumento, eles tentaram obter financiamento em todo o mundo e encontraram-no na Índia e nos EUA! “Os investidores acreditaram em nós e neste projeto e ajudaram-nos a criar este filme e estamos agradecidos a todos eles… Não foi fácil, mas conseguimos e só podemos esperar que todos os investidores ainda estejam felizes com o filme”. Isso foi o que Sitaram teve que nos dizer sobre a parte de financiamento e, sendo um produtor, ele afirmou que o projeto não era fácil de vender!
But what led this two men to this experience? “The passion for sci-fi movies and the desire of creating our own film”. With this ambition in mind, Haeems and Sitaram embarked on the journey and created the script of “Chimera”, a film where a brilliant but disturbed scientist freezes his children alive, to arrest the progression of their deadly genetic disease, while he races against time to unlock the secrets of immortality encoded within the DNA of the Turritopsis jellyfish.
After they finnished the scritp, they tried to get finnance all over the world and they found it in India and in the US! “The investors believed in us and in this project and help us create this film, we are gratefull to all of them….It wasn't easy, but we did it and we can only hope that all the investors are still happy with their decision to invest in this film”. This was what Sitaram had to tell us about the financing part and, being a producer, he recgonizes that the project wasn’t an easy sell!
A história de “Chimera” acrescenta uma nova voz ao debate sobre células-tronco humanas, testes em animais e ética genética. Nós mencionamos isso e, na verdade, essa foi a intenção dos dois criadores. A inspiração por trás da história é uma história pessoal para ambos que envolve uma doença complexa que afetou um dos membros de sua família. Foi essa história difícil que os levou a imaginar a história de Quinn e como esse cientista complexo viola todas as regras éticas do livro para descobrir uma cura para uma doença que afeta um ente querido (dois, no caso do filme). Tanto Haeems quanto Sitaram não têm experiência profissional em ciência, mas eles disseram que tentaram tornar o “filme mais realista possível”. “Há experiências genéticos reais que estão a ser feitas em animais que combinam DNA de diferentes espécies com o objetivo de superar um problema de saúde ou uma predisposição genética. A tecnologia ainda está a anos de estar pronta para testes em humanos, mas há muitos estudos sobre o assunto. A ideia é real, mas o contexto é pura ficção”. Isto é o que Haeems tinha a dizer sobre a base real deste filme que também tem um elenco poderoso. “Os nossos investidores ajudaram-nos a conseguir o elenco e todos eles foram profissionais e competentes e, claro está. estamos também a incluir os nossos inexperientes membros da família que apareceram no filme”, disse Sitaram.
Foi um prazer conversar com Haeems e Sitaram, especialmente depois de ter visto o resultado final. É uma excelente história, especialmente se levarmos em consideração que nenhum deles teve experiência anterior em filmes ou qualquer tipo de educação em cinema. Isso prova que se você quiser fazer um filme e se é apaixonado pelo seu objetivo, então deve ir em frente e concretizar o sonho! Mas a aventura deles vai acabar com “Chimera”? Claro que não! De acordo com Haeems, “Chimera representa a nossa estreia e a realização do nosso sonho, mas já estamos a trabalhar num segundo filme… Queremos continuar a trabalhar nesta indústria enquanto pudermos e há pessoas que acreditam em nós…. O lançamento da Chimera foi importante para entendermos como a indústria funciona e como o público reage, então agora podemos esperar que o segundo filme seja ainda melhor ”. E sobre o que é esse futuro filme? Bem, não podemos ainda, porque Haeems e Sitaram ainda estão à procura de financiamento para esse projeto, mas podemos dizer que será outro projeto de ficção científica e ambos são fãs obstinados do filme de culto da ficção científica. "Gattaca"! Curiosos?
The story of “Chimera” adds a new voice to the debate on human stem cells, animal testing, and genetics ethics. We mention this and, in fact, this was the intention of the two creators. The inspiration behind the story is a personal story for both of them that envolves a complex disease that came upon one of their family members. It was that hard story that led them to imagine the story of Quinn and how this complex cientist violates every ethic rule in the book to discover a cure for a deadly deciease that affects a loved one (in the film case, two).
Both Haeems and Sitaram don’t have a background in science, but yet they told us they tried to make the “more realistic film possible”. “There are actual genetic experiments being made in animals that combine DNA from diferente species with the objetive of overcoming a health problem or a genetic predisposition. The technology is still years away from beiing ready for human testing, but there are plenty of studies on the matter. The idea is real, but the context is pure fiction”. This is what, Haeems had to say about the real basis of this powerfull film that also has a powerfull cast. “Our investors helped us get the cast, and all of them were professional and we are even including our inexperience family members that appeared in the film”, said Sitaram.
It was a pleasure to talk with both Haeems and Sitaram, especially after I saw that the end result was a very good one, specially if we take in consideration that none of them had previous film experience or any type of film education. This proves that if you want to make a film, and if you are passionate about your goal, then you should go ahead and do it! But is their film adventure going to end with “Chimera”? Offcourse Not! According to Haeems, ”Chimera represents our debut and the realization of our dream, but we are already working on a second film….We want to keep working in this industry as long as we can and there are people that believe in us…..The launch of Chimera was important for us to understand how the industry works and how audiences react, so now we can hope the second film is even better”. And what is this future film about? Well we can’t that just yet, because Haeems and Sitaram are still looking for financing for that project, but we can tell you it’s going to be another sci-fi project and they are both die hard fans of the sci-fi cult film “Gattaca”! Curious?
