Portal Cinema (PC) – You’re presenting “Ghost Stories” at MOTELx 2018. What can you tell us about this project and how it came to be? What’s the story behind it? / Vem apresentar "Ghost Stories" ao MOTELx 2018. O que nos pode dizer sobre este projeto e como é que surgiu?
Jeremy Dyson (JD) - Officially Ghost Stories began life as a stage play in the UK in early 2010 – although it’s genesis could be traced back all the way to mine and Andy Nyman’s teenage years in 1981. We met at a summer camp aged 15 and became the greatest of friends. The friendship endures to this day and Ghost Stories grew out of it – an expression of the friendship, if you like. One of the things we bonded over was a love of horror movies and Ghost Stories is, in part, an homage to that love.
The show was born when Andy called me out of the blue about 10 years ago saying he’d had this idea for a play where three men sat on chairs tell ghost stories to the audience. He wondered if I’d like to write it with him. What we worked on grew from that idea. The play was an immediate success in the UK, transferring from subsidized theatre where it began to the West End where it ran for over two years. It played internationally too – in Canada, Russia, Australia, China, Peru among other countries.
We talked about making a film of it – but wanted to wait until the time was right for us creatively – which meant leaving a bit of distance from the original production. We wrote the script on spec in 2013 and took it out to market – settling very quickly on Warp Films as our producing partners as we loved their output and approach. It took three years to raise the finance but we were working on the script all that time so it was a good thing, from the point of view of the finished movie.
Oficialmente, "Ghost Stories" nasceu como uma peça de teatro no Reino Unido no início de 2010, embora a sua génese possa ser rastreada até a minha adolescência em 1981 e à do Andy Nyman. Nós conhecemos-nos num acampamento de Verão aos 15 anos e tornamos-nos logo nos maiores amigos. A amizade perdura até hoje e este filme acabou por surgir dela, ou seja, é mais uma expressão da nossa amizade. Uma das coisas que nos conectou foi o amor por filmes de terror e "Ghost Stories" é, em parte, uma homenagem a esse amor.
O espectáculo em si, do qual falei, nasceu quando o Andy ligou-me do nada há cerca de 10 anos. Disse-me que teve uma ideia para uma peça em que três homens que estão sentados em cadeiras contam histórias de fantasmas ao público. Ele perguntou-me se eu gostaria de escrever com ele a peça e eu aceitei. O que nós produzimos cresceu dessa ideia. A peça foi um sucesso imediato no Reino Unido, transferindo-se rapidamente do teatro subsidiado onde começou para o West End, onde esteve em exibição por mais de dois anos. Foi também exibida internacionalmente - no Canadá, Rússia, Austrália, China, Peru entre outros países.
Nós conversamos sobre fazer um filme com base na peça, mas queríamos esperar até que fosse a hora certa para nós, pelo menos do ponto de vista criativo. Nós acabamos por escrever o argumento em 2013 e apresentamos-lo ao mercado, tendo este sido rapidamente adquirido pela Warp Films que se estabeleceu como o nosso parceiro, já que ambos adoramos a sua produção e abordagem. No total demoramos três anos para concluir o processo de financiamento, mas estivemos a melhorar o argumento durante todo esse tempo, por isso até foi uma coisa boa ter demorado tanto tempo a arrancar
PC – What led you to the decision to co-write and co-direct this film? This is your first feature film made for theater release, so was there any added pressure because of this? / O que os levou à decisão de co-escrever e co-realizar este filme? Este é o vosso primeiro filme e isso provocou alguma pressão adicional?
JD - It was the only way we wanted to do it. We’d directed the stage play together (along with our collaborator Sean Holmes who’d commissioned the play in the first place) and we realized early on that if there was to be a film of it – we’d have to make it ourselves. We were so connected to the material that we couldn’t bear the idea of turning it over to someone else to make.
Sempre quisemos que fosse desta forma. Nós tínhamos realizado a peça de teatro juntos (juntamente com o nosso colaborador Sean Holmes que inicialmente nos encomendado a peça) e percebemos que se houvesse um filme baseado na peça, nós teríamos que fazer comandar o projeto sozinhos. Estávamos tão relacionados com o material que não conseguimos suportar a ideia de entregá-lo a outra pessoa para o fazer.
PC – Was it hard to choose the cast? What was the process behind the selection the movie stars? Foi difícil escolher o elenco? Qual foi o processo por trás da selecção dos protagonistas?
JD - Casting was a delight. All the leads were our first choices. We couldn’t believe it when Martin Freeman agreed to come on board. He’s a wonderful actor and just right for Mike Priddle. Paul Whitehouse is one of the UK’s greatest comic actors and very rarely performs material other than his own – so we were honoured when he agreed to be in the movie. Alex Lawther was the first role we cast. He came in and auditioned and me and Andy were blown away by his skill and his ability to portray emotions – as well as comedy.
O casting foi uma maravilha. Todas os protagonistas foram as nossas primeiras escolhas. Nós nem queríamos acreditar quando o Martin Freeman concordou em fazer parte do filme. É um ator maravilhoso e perfeito para o papel Mike Priddle. Paul Whitehouse é um dos maiores atores cómicos do Reino Unido e muito raramente executa um material diferente do seu, por isso também ficamos honrados quando ele concordou em participar no filme. Foi ao Alex Lawther que atribuímos o primeiro papel, ele foi a primeira escolha de todas. Ele fez o casting e, quase de imediato, eu e o Andy ficamos impressionados com o seu talento
PC - And how was directing your co-director, Andy Nyman? / Como é que foi dirigir o seu co-realizador, Andy Nyman?
JD - Well – we’d already done it in the stage version (Andy played Professor Goodman on stage) – so we had an established practice. Additionally – we’re such close friends – doing the thing we love the most together – it really made it a heavenly experience.
Nós já tínhamos feito isto na versão de palco (Andy interpretou o professor Goodman no teatro), por isso já tínhamos uma prática estabelecida. Além disso, somos amigos à vários anos e fazemos a coisa que mais gostamos juntos, o que ajudou a tornar tudo muma experiência celestial.
PC – What were the main challenges of making “Ghost Stories?/ Quais foram os maiores desafios de fazer este "Ghost Stories"?
JD - The biggest challenge was leaving the stage version behind. The stage play was a very theatrical production and we wanted the film to be as cinematic as possible. The play toyed with the idea of putting clichés from horror films on stage – where they could appear fresh. The great challenge was how to put them on screen without having them revert to clichés.
O maior desafio foi tentar deixar a versão de teatro para trás. A peça era uma produção muito teatral e queríamos que o filme fosse o mais cinematográfico possível. A peça brincou com a idéia de colocar clichés de filmes de terror no palco, onde eles poderiam parecer frescos. O grande desafio para nós foi tentar colocá-los na tela sem que eles se tornassem clichés efetivos.
PC – The film was showcased in several movie festivals, some of them quite popular. What was the reaction to those screenings? And what are your ambitions for the film? / O filme foi exibido em vários festivais de cinema, alguns deles bastante populares. Qual foi a reação a essas exibições? E quais são as suas ambições para o filme?
JD - The reaction to the film has been enthusiastic – wherever it has played, I’m delighted to say. We very much enjoy watching it with different audiences in different countries. Surprisingly perhaps – given how English the movie is – it plays similarly (or at least it has so far). In the US, in Amsterdam, in Australia. I guess we’ll see what you make of it in Portugal. In terms of ambitions – our goal was simple. To take the audience on a real ride and hopefully leave them with something to think about.
A reação ao filme foi entusiástica por todos os locais que passou e fico feliz por dizê-lo. Nós gostamos muito de o ver com diferentes públicos em diferentes países. Surpreendentemente, tem tido reações muito similares (ou pelo menos até agora). Nos EUA, em Amesterdão, na Australia. Acho que vamos ver o que acontece em Portugal. Em termos de ambições, o nosso objetivo era simples. Levar o público num passeio real e esperançosamente deixá-los com algo em que pensar.
PC – What are your major influences in the movie/television industries? / Quais são as suas maiores influências?
JD - Many many different things. We grew up loving the horror movies we saw on TV – Dead of Night (the original horror anthology film made by Ealing Film in the UK in 1945). The later Amicus anthologies from the 60s and 70s. Val Lewton’s eerie and atmospheric horror films for RKO in the 40s. Also there was a lot of wonderful TV horror in the 70s when we were kids in the UK – notably the annual BBC Christmas ghost story – made by the brilliantly gifted Laurence Gordon Clark.
Muitas! Tanto eu como o Andy crescemos a adorar os filmes de terror que vimos na TV - Dead of Night (o filme original de terror feito pela Ealing Film no Reino Unido em 1945). As antologias Amicus posteriores dos anos 60 e 70. Os filmes de terror misteriosos e atmosféricos de Val Lewton para a RKO nos anos 40. Também havia muito terror de TV maravilhoso nos anos 70 quando éramos crianças no Reino Unido - notavelmente a história anual de Fantasmas de Natal da BBC - feita pelo brilhantemente talentoso Laurence Gordon Clark.
PC – Any plans of repeating the partnership in future projects? / Há planos para repetirem a parceria no futuro?
JD - Absolutely – we’ve already begun writing our next film together.

PC - Finalmente, o que podemos esperar de ambos no futuro e quais são os seus próximos projetos?
JD - I’m currently working on a number of projects. I’m writing an episode of the second series of Killing Eve for BBC America - and have various scripts of my own in development. I also am part of a comedy group in the UK – The League of Gentlemen and we’re currently touring a live show there ,for the first time in 12 years which I’m very much enjoying.

Também faço parte de um grupo de comédia no Reino Unido - The League of Gentlemen e estamos a preparar um espetáculo ao vivo, algo que acontecerá pela primeira vez em 12 anos!
