We've recently got in touch with Hanna Levien, a promising young Australian actress who has appeared on a number of prominent projects such as "The Siren", "The Magicians" and indie films like "The Horseman" and "Children of Sorrow". Get to know this promising actress a little better!
Portal Cinema – First of all, tell us about your background. When and Why did you decided to embark on an acting career? / Antes de mais gostaria que nos falasse um pouco sobre o seu passado. Quando e porque é que decidiu embarcar numa carreira de atriz?
Hannah Levien (HL) - I grew up in Australia. I took drama classes on an off as a kid - mainly going along with other friends that were doing it. But i always felt very comfortable on stage, playing other characters. Then at about age 10/11 I started falling in love with films. I remember watching Dead Poets Society and announcing to my parents - that's what i want to do! I'm going to be an actor!

PC – In the beginning of your career you participated in several short films, a type of film that many undervalue. Do you think the roles on those shorts helped your career? And what kind of experience did you get from them? / No início da sua carreira, participou em várias curtas-metragens, um tipo de filme que muitos subestimam. Acha que os papéis nessas curtas ajudaram a sua carreira? E que tipo de experiência retirou deles?
HL - Absolutely. Australia doesn’t have a huge film/tv industry and I was eager to learn and get my hands on whatever experience I could. I went to drama school straight out of high school and my teachers always encouraged me to learn by doing. So I took all the experience I could get haha.

Fui para a escola de teatro logo depois do ensino secundário e os meus professores sempre me incentivaram a aprender com o trabalho prático. Por isso aproveitei essas curtas para adquirir uma grande experiência
PC – Your first feature film was a role on the indie surprise “The Horseman”. What was that experience like? / A sua primeira longa-metragem foi na surpresa indie “The Horseman”. Como foi essa experiência?
HL - After drama school, I was cast in an independent feature film in Australia called The Horseman - it did really well overseas and played SXSW Film Festival which was a big deal for a low budget film from a first-time feature filmmaker! It was a great experience and I’ve since worked with the Producer and keep in touch with the Director (Steven Kastrissios).
Após a escola de teatro, fui então escolhida para participar num filme independente na Austrália chamado "The Horseman". Teve uma recepção muito boa no estrangeiro e passou até no SXSW Film Festival, algo muito grande para um filme de baixo orçamento de um cineasta novato! Foi uma ótima experiência e desde então trabalhei com o Produtor e mantive contato com o diretor (Steven Kastrissios).
PC – What followed was a series of horror/thriller projects, including the feature film “Children of Sorrow”. What can you tell us about your incursion on the horror genre? Do you think it boosted your career? / O que se seguiu foi uma série de projetos de terror / suspense, incluindo a longa-metragem “Children of Sorrow”. O que você pode nos dizer sobre essa sua incursão no género de terror? Acha que isso impulsionou a sua carreira?
HL - I booked Children of Sorrow not long after moving to Los Angeles and it was a great experience for me. I don’t really differentiate projects based on their genre. To me - it’s all about telling a story, and team work, and connecting to a character and her journey. I played the lead role in Children of Sorrow so I had a really interesting journey through the film and working with Bill Oberst Jr was such a great experience.
Fui contratada para participar em "Children of Sorrow" pouco depois de me mudar para Los Angeles e foi uma ótima experiência para mim. Eu realmente não diferencio projetos baseados no gênero deles. Para mim, trata-se de contar uma história, um trabalho em equipa e conectar-se a um personagem e à sua jornada. Fiz o papel principal em "Children of Sorrow" e, graças a isso, tive uma viagem realmente interessante através do filme e trabalhar com Bill Oberst Jr foi uma ótima experiência.
PC – You appeared on several interesting and popular Tv Shows. One of those was “Supernatural”. What was like filming for that series? And how was the experience working at the “The Returned” tv series? / Apareceu em vários programas de TV interessantes e populares. Um deles foi "Sobrenatural". Como foi filmar essa série? E como foi a experiência de trabalhar na série de TV “The Returned”?
HL - ‘Supernatural’ is a great team - so much fun. I had a blast on that show! And getting to be in the 200th episode was so cool. ’The Returned’ was a great experience - i loved the French version of the same name and was eager to work on the American remake. Unfortunately a lot of my scenes didn’t make it into the final cut for the show, but I love Carlton Cuse and the team on The Returned- and have since worked with them on other shows (e.g. Colony).
"Sobrenatural" tem uma grande equipa que é muito divertida e eu diverti-me imenso. E ter participado no episódio 200 foi fantástico. "The Returned" foi também uma ótima experiência! Eu adorei a versão francesa e estava ansiosa para trabalhar no remake americano. Infelizmente, muitas das minhas cenas não chegaram ao corte final, mas eu adoro Carlton Cuse e a equipa de "The Returned" - e desde então já trabalhei com ela em outros shows (por exemplo, Colony).
PC – Let’s talk about “The Magicians”, a very popular show in Portugal and in Brazil. How did you end up doing this show? And how did it change your career? / Falando agora sobre "The Magicians", uma série muito popular em Portugal e no Brasil. Como é que acabou por participar neste projeto? E como é que isso mudou a sua carreira?
HL - I've loved working on Syfy's series 'The Magicians' - it's such a fun show with great scripts and so much imagination gone into it. I love being a part of it and I love my character Victoria.
Eu adorei trabalhar nessa série da Syfy, 'The Magicians' é uma série tão divertido, com ótimos argumentos e muita imaginação. Eu adoro fazer parte disso e amo a minha personagem Victoria.
PC – Will we see Victoria again in “The Magicians”, maybe on the 4th Season? / Voltaremos a ver a Victoria outra vez, talvez na Temporada 4?
HL - I can’t say yet! / Para já não posso dizer nada!
PC - After “The Magicians” you appeared on another popular series with a fantasy theme, “The Siren”. What challenges did this show presented you? / Depois de “The Magicians” apareceu em outra série muito popular com um tema de fantasia, “The Siren”. Que desafios é que essa série lhe apresentou?
HL - I think any new series is a challenge in its first season. Everyone wants to make it the best it can be! It can take a bit of time to find out who your character really is and how they fit into the overall picture/story. It's a challenge, but I like to think of it more as an exploration.
Acho que qualquer nova série é um desafio na sua primeira temporada. Toda a gente quer fazer o melhor possível! Pode levar um pouco de tempo para descobrir quem realmente é a sua personagem e como eles se encaixam no quadro geral / história. É um desafio, mas gosto de pensar nisso mais como uma exploração.
PC – Will your character Janine return for Season 2? If so, what can we expect from her? / Veremos a Janine de novo na 2ª Temporada? O que podemos esperar dela?
HL - I can say that yes Janine is back! But beyond that - my lips are sealed!! / Posso dizer que sim, a Janine vai regressar, mas não possa adiantar mais sobre esse tema!!
PC – How do you describe this show that is going to premiere in Portugal at SyFy Portugal this September? / Como descreve esta série que estreará em Setembro em Portugal no canal Syfy?
HL - It’s like a cross between H2O, Vampire Diaries and The Returned! It’s got a great eery atmosphere and so many interesting characters. Lots of strong women and strange creatures - it really keeps audiences guessing, but is also a lot of fun.
É como um cruzamento entre H2O, Vampire Diaries e The Returned! Tem uma atmosfera fantástica e muitos personagens interessantes. Muitas mulheres fortes e criaturas estranhas - isso realmente mantém o público adivinhando, mas também é muito divertido.
PC – You are undoubtedly a very versatile actress, having work both on cinema and television on several genres and roles. Have you ever done some theater work? If so, did you enjoy it? A Hanna é, sem dúvida, uma atriz muito versátil, tendo trabalho tanto no cinema como na televisão em diversos géneros e papéis. Você já fez algum trabalho para o teatro? Se sim, gostou?
HL - Yes I grew up doing theatre, and went to drama school to study theatre full time. I love it! / Sim, eu cresci a fazer teatro, e fui para a escola de teatro para estudar teatro em tempo integral. E amo o teatro!
PC – What are your major influences in the acting and movie/television industries? / Quais são suas principais influências nas indústrias da representação no cinema / televisão?
HL - I’ve been so inspired by so many wonderful actors - and films/TV series. My favourite movie is Deerhunter with Meryl Streep, and favourite TV series is The Wire.
Tenho sido inspirada por tantos atores maravilhosos - e filmes / séries de TV. O meu filme favorito é "Deerhunter" com Meryl Streep, e a minha série de TV favorita é "The Wire".
PC – What are your hopes, ambitions and objectives for your professional career? / Quais são as suas esperanças, ambições e objetivos para a sua carreira profissional?
HL - I hope to keep working on interesting, challenging and fun material that keeps me hungry and learning! I’ve also been developing some of my own projects. A short film I wrote and act in ‘Hunting Season’ is currently playing at film festivals around the world. And i’m excited to create more content.
Espero poder continuar a trabalhar em projetos interessante, desafiadores e divertidos que me mantenham com fome de aprender! Eu também tenho desenvolvido alguns dos meus próprios projetos. Um curta-metragem que eu escrevi e atuei chamada "Hunting Season" está atualmente em festivais de cinema ao redor do mundo. E estou animado para criar mais conteúdo.
