Durante o MOTELx, o Portal Cinema teve a oportunidade de entrevistar o famoso realizador espanhol Paco Plaza, conhecido por filmes como "REC" ou "Verónica". Foi uma conversa muito empolgante, mas não acredite em nós, pode ler a entrevista na integra de seguida.
During MOTELx, Portal Cinema had the opportunity to interview the famous Spanish director Paco Plaza, known for popular films such as "REC" or "Verónica". It was a very exciting conversation, but do not believe our word, because you can read the full interview right away.
Portal Cinema (PC) – Can you take us back to the beginning of your career and tell us about your first directing experiences and how you started your career? / Pode-nos leva até ao inÃcio da sua carreira e contar-nos tudo sobre as suas primeiras experiências como realizador e como começou a sua carreira?
Paco Plaza (PC) - I studied at the film school in Madrid (ECAM) and after doing several short films, one producer saw one of them and he proposed my name to adapt a novel by Ramsey Campbell. And so it began...

PC РWhat are your major movie influences? Where does the love for horror cinema comes from? / Quais ṣo as suas principais influ̻ncias.
PP - It has always been my favorite genre since I was a child. I started watching the classics of the Universal and several Spanish horror movies, which are among my favorites. My biggest influences I think would be Chicho Ibáñez Serrador, Eugenio MartÃn, also Mario Bava but my influences are not only linked to horror. I'm also very close to a comedy line and admire directors like Berlanga or Alex de la Iglesia. Also, my favorite director is Buñuel.
O terror sempre foi o meu género favorito desde que era criança. Comecei a ver os clássicos da Universal e vários filmes de terror espanhóis, que estão entre os meus favoritos. As minhas maiores influências são Chicho Ibáñez Serrador, Eugênio MartÃn, também Mario Bava, mas as minhas influências não estão ligadas apenas ao terror. Também estou muito perto de uma linha de comédia e admiro realizadores como Berlanga ou Alex de la Iglesia. Além disso, o meu realizador favorito é o Buñuel.
PC – Before you launched the major hit “[Rec]”, you directed two feature films that also enjoy a lot of popularity, namely in the film festival circuit. Your first feature film was “El Segundo Nombre”. How was the experience of directing your first film, and did you expect it would only be the beginning of a great career in horror films? / Antes de lançar o grande sucesso “[Rec]”, realizou duass longas-metragens que também gozaram de muita popularidade, nomeadamente no circuito dos festivais de cinema. O seu primeiro filme foi "El Segundo Nombre". Como foi a experiência de realizar o seu primeiro filme?
PP - I had a rather erratic and difuse process for so long. I was very young and very enthusiastic and I remember the happiness of feeling that I was doing something that was going to be seen in a movie theater. That enthusiasm is what I try to connect with every time I start a new project.
Tive um processo criativo bastante errático e difuso durante muito tempo. Era muito jovem e entusiasmado e lembro-me perfeitamente da felicidade de sentir que estava a fazer algo que seria visto num cinema. Tento conectar-me com esse entusiasmo sempre que começo um novo projeto.
PC – What followed was “Romasanta” that, till this day, it’s considered a cult film within the European horror genre. Can you tell us what led you to this project? It was hard to get finance for a Werewolf Themed film before Werewolf’s became cool, according to Hollywood standards? / O que se seguiu foi “Romasanta” que, até hoje, é considerado um filme de culto dentro do género de terror europeu. Pode.nos dizer o que o levou a este projeto?
PP - None of my first two films were personal projects, they were commissions. I agreed to direct ROMASANTA, which was a film that was already financed and sold for the pleasure of shooting a werewolf film, which is a genre that I adore.
Nenhum dos meus dois primeiros filmes foram projetos pessoais, foram comissões. Eu apenas concordei em realizar o ROMASANTA pelo prazer de filmar um filme de lobisomens, que é um género que adoro.
PC – Moving on to “[Rec]”, an instant horror classic that rocked the world. Where did the idea to create it come from? How was it to work with Mr. Jaume Balagueró and Luiso Berdeiro on this project? Were you surprised by the success of this film? Falando agora de "[Rec]", um clássico de terror que abalou o mundo. De onde surgiu a ideia de criá-lo? Como foi trabalhar com Jaume Balagueró e Luiso Berdeiro neste projeto?
PP- It was totally unexpected for us. It was a little mischief, a small film shared with Jaume, a great friend and whom I consider a basic reference in horror movies. That unpretentious movie ended up changing our lives and my way of understanding cinema.
Foi totalmente inesperado para nós. Foi uma pequena travessura, um pequeno filme compartilhado com Jaume, um grande amigo e quem eu considero uma referência em filmes de terror. Esse pequeno filme despretensioso acabou por mudar as nossas vidas e minha maneira de entender o cinema.
PC – The “[Rec]” franchise continued for more three films. How do you describe the saga and how do you explain it’s success? Would you do anything different knowing what you know now and seeing the end result? What would you improved (if any) if you were to remake them? / A saga “[Rec]” continuou por mais três filmes. Como descreve a saga e como explica o seus sucesso?
PP - Analyzing the movies you have made is very difficult. They all obey a specific moment in your life and this determines how the movie is going to be. It was a very happy stage of my life, and I am very proud especially of the third, of the decision not to continue a beaten path and try to make something completely different of what was supposed to be a sequel.
Analisar os filmes que já fizeste é muito difÃcil. Todos eles obedecem a um momento especÃfico da tua vida e isso determina como o filme será. Foi uma fase muito feliz da minha vida, e estou muito orgulhoso, especialmente do terceiro, da decisão de não continuar um caminho já batido e tentar fazer algo completamente diferente do que deveria ser uma sequela.
PC – Still speaking of “(Rec)”, what did you thought of the North-American Version: “Quarantine”? / Ainda sobre“(Rec)”, o que ahou da versão norte-americana: “Quarentena”?
PP - The remakes greatly help to increase prestige of the originals, that's why I can not be more grateful to that movie.
Os remakes ajudam a aumentar o prestÃgio dos originais. É por isso que eu estou muito grato a esse filme.
PC - After “(REC) 3 Genesis”, you directed a short film “Ultravioleta”, an one tv episode for the hit tv show “El Ministerio del Tiempo”, but then, in 2017 you returned to the feature film world with “Veronica”. Did the “(Rec)” experience inspire you to create “Veronica”? How do you describe it and what can you say the audience to convince them to see it? / Após “(REC) 3 Genesis”, realizou a curta-metragem “Ultravioleta” e um episódio de TV da série “El Ministerio del Tiempo”, mas em 2017 você regressou ao mundo dos filmes de terror com “Veronica”. A experiência em “(Rec)” inspirou-o a criar “Veronica”? Como o descreve e o que pode dizer ao público para convencê-los a ir vê-lo?
PP - As I already told you, the movies are radiographs of the moment in your life when you make them. Veronica is the film that I am most proud of, it was like renewing the vows with a love for horror films.
Como já disse, os filmes são radiografias do momento da tua vida em que os fazes. Veronica é o filme de que mais me orgulho, foi como renovar os votos com amor pelos filmes de terror.
PC – Do you believe that the huge success of “(Rec)” may harm you in the future, because people may compare your new works with your major hit? / Acredita que o enorme sucesso de “(Rec)” pode prejudicá-lo no futuro, porque as pessoas podem comparar os seus novos trabalhos com o seu grande sucesso?
PP - The success is very relative. In the case of "REC" there is no negative aspect. It is a film that gave us the opportunity to receive the affection of people from all over the world who appreciated and valued the film. There is no negative part in my experience with "REC", on the contrary.
O sucesso é muito relativo. No caso de "REC" não há aspecto negativo. É um filme que nos deu a oportunidade de receber o carinho de pessoas de todo o mundo que apreciaram e valorizaram o filme. Não há parte negativa na minha experiência com "REC", pelo contrário.
PC – The horror genre has always been very popular worldwide, but in Spain and in Spanish speaking Latin-American countries, the Horror Genre is at an all-time high level of popularity and investment and, due to that, we have been graced with many high level horror productions in Spanish. Why do you think Horror is so popular in Spain and in Latin America? / O género de terror sempre foi muito popular em todo o mundo, mas em Espanha e nos paÃses Latino-Americanos de LÃngua Espanhola, o terror está num alto nÃvel de popularidade e investimento e, devido a isso, fomos agraciados com muitos produções de terror de nÃvel em espanhol. Por que acha que o terror é tão popular na Espanha e na América Latina?
PP I do not know if it so popular as it seems, really, it's an analysis that comes from an external perspective. Here we do works of horror that have no success, others moderate and a few are comercial hits, like any other genre. In fact, comedy or drama are much more frequent genres in our cinema.
Não sei se é assim tão popular quanto parece, na verdade, é uma análise que vem de uma perspectiva externa. Aqui fazemos obras de terror que não têm sucesso, outros sucesso moderado e alguns sim são sucessos comerciais, como acontece aliás em qualquer outro género. Na realidade, a comédia ou drama são géneros muito mais frequentes no nosso cinema.
PC – Any plans of doing a film in Portugal or with a Portuguese influence? Maybe a “(Rec)” origin story featuring the background of the famous Medeiros Girl? / Algum plano para fazer um filme em Portugal ou com influência portuguesa? Talvez uma história de origem “(Rec)” sobre a famosa Medeiros Girl?
PP - That would be a dream. The other day I talked with Jaume to take up the character of the Medeiros Girl and set her up in Portugal would be wonderful. I have not visited Lisbon since 1995, so I really want to see how it has changed.
Isso seria um sonho. No outro dia até falei com o Jaume sobre a possibilidade de fazer um filme de origem sobre a Menina Medeiros e fazê-lo em Portugal seria maravilhoso. Não visito Lisboa desde 1995, por isso gostaria de ver como é que a cidade mudou.
PC – What do you intend to do next? Any new projects on your agenda? / O que nos pode dizer sobre os seus próximos projetos?
PP - Next year I will premiere QIEN A HIERRO MATA, a thriller that I shot in Galicia this summer.
No próximo ano lançarei QIEN A HIERRO MATA, um thriller que fiz na Galiza neste Verão.
