O Portal Cinema esteve à conversa com Marie-Louise Damgaard, uma conhecida atriz sueca que já participou em múltiplas produções nórdicas, quer no cinema, quer na televisão. Após se destacar como atriz, Marie-Louise Damgaard decidiu unir esforços com o famoso produtor dinamarquês Kim Magnusson, já vencedor de 2 Óscares de Melhor Curta-Metragem, para criar "The Confirmation". É com esta obra que Damgaard espera chegar também ela aos Óscares e, após visionarmos o filme, podemos garantir que este é claramente um dos candidatos à nomeação final! Portal Cinema had a conversation with Marie-Louise Damgaard, a well-known Swedish actress who had participated in multiple Nordic productions, both in cinema and on television. After highlighting herself as an actress, Marie-Louise Damgaard decided to join forces with the famous Danish producer Kim Magnusson, already winner of 2 Best Short Film Oscars, to create "The Confirmation". It is with this work that Damgaard hopes to make it to the Oscars as well, and after viewing the film, we can guarantee that it is clearly one of the main candidates for the final nomination! Impacting and Exquisite, "The Confirmation" is a dramatic production that explores an ancient struggle of ideals that has accompanied the centuries, but which in recent years has gained new prominence and had a greater social concern. From a familiar and emotive perspective, "The Confirmation" fights prejudice by using an old movie plot: the strength of family ties. We spoke with Marie-Louise Damgaard about this work, but also about her career.
Portal Cinema – Fale-nos um pouco sobre a sua formação profissional e porque é que decidiu iniciar uma carreira profissional na indústria cinematográfica? Quais são as suas inspirações e influências na indústria?/ First of all, tell us about your professional background, and why did you decided to embark on a professional career in the film industry? What are your inspirations and influences in the industry?
Marie-Louise Damgaard (MLD) - Quando entrei no ramo, foi como atriz. Acho que senti uma sensação de exigência já que as pessoas esperavam algo de mim e, por isso, sentia que tinha que ser de uma certa maneira. Quando fui para a escola de teatro, ninguém tinha uma idéia pré-concebida de quem eu era. Entregando-me ao trabalho e aos personagens, encontrei quem eu queria ser. Adoro contar histórias e deixar a criança em mim viver através dos filmes. Acho que foi isso que me fez continuar essa jornada, mesmo que nem sempre tenha sido fácil. Sou muito inspirada por Sofia Coppola, mas um dos meus cineasta favoritos é o Steve Mcqueen. Já vi "Shame" mais vezes do que aquelas consigo contar. "Persona" de Ingmar Bergman e "Dancer in the Dark" de Lars Von Trier também tiveram impacto em mim. É difícil para mim contabilizar mais filmes, já que sou um grande fã de cinema e de muitos géneros diferentes.
When I first got into the field, it was as an actress. I think, I felt a sense of people expecting something of me, from me or that I had to be a certain way. When I went to acting school, no one had a pre-conceived idea of who I was. Giving myself over to the work and characters, I found myself & who I wanted to be. I love telling stories and let the child in me live on, which I can through film. I guess this is what has made be continue on this journey, even though it hasn’t always been easy. I’m very inspired by Sofia Coppela, one of my favorite directors is Steve Mcqueen, I’ve seen “Shame” more time then I can count and Ingmar Bergman’s “Persona” and Lars Von Trier’s “Dancer in the Dark” have probably had the biggest impact on me. It’s hard to narrow down though, I’m a huge fan of cinema & lots of different genres.
PC - O que o levou a realizar "The Confirmation"? E qual foi o seu plano inicial para o filme e como desenvolveu o poderoso tema "transgénero vs religião"?/ What led you to direct “The Confirmation”? What was your initial plan for the film and how did the powerful theme of “transgender vs religion” developed?
MLD - No Inverno de 2017, fiz um curso de escrita, onde desenvolvi a ideia geral para The Confirmation. Quando o curso terminou, senti que tinha algo em mãos, então continuei a trabalhar na ideia transformei-a enventualmente num argumento. Quando o terminei no Verão de 2017, entrei em contato com o produtor Kim Magnusson, já vencedor de um Óscar. Ele arriscou em mim e no meu filme, quando mais ninguém ousou fazer. Com ele a bordo, sei que havia uma certa expectativa, tanto de mim mesma e do mundo exterior, e, por isso, eu fiz tudo ao meu alcance para que o filme cumprisse essas expectativas.
A questão da identidade / género versus religião, era algo que eu queria abordar desde o início. Queria pegar em duas coisas, que geralmente não andam de mãos dadas, e ver se eu poderia combinar as duas, sem que existisse um conflito. Sinto-me fascinada com o "conceito" de religião. Quanto isso afetou a nossa visão do mundo, modo de vida e cultura. Se é cristão, muçulmano, hindu ou ateu, é bem provável que tenha algum conceito / opinião sobre a religião e, por isso, não consigo pensar em mais nada que tenha tido tanto impacto na Humanidade e acho isso muito fascinante.
In the winter of 2017 I took a script writing course, where I developed the general idea for THE CONFIRMATION. As the course finished, I felt I had something, so I continued to work on it and made it into a script. When completed in the summer of 2017, I got in touch with Academy award winning producer, Kim Magnusson. Long story short, he took a chance on me & my film, when no one else dared. With him onboard, I know there was a certain expectation, both from myself, Kim & the outside world, and I’ve done everything in my power for the film to live up to that.
The question of identity/gender vs religion, was something I know from the very beginning I wanted to play with. I wanted to take two things, which don’t generally go hand in hand and see if I could combine the two, without there being a clash. I’m very fascinated with the “concept” of religion. How much it has had an effect on our world view, way of life & culture. Whether you’re Christian, Muslim, Hindu or an atheist, you have some concept/opinion of religion, I can’t think of anything else, that has had such an impacted on humanity and I find that very fascinating.
PC – Diga-nos o que espera que o público sinta ao ver este filme? Qual é a principal lição que este filme pode transmitir ao público? /Tell us what do you expect the audience to feel when watching this film? What’s for you the major lesson that this film can transmit to the audience?
MLD -
Espero que o público tenha uma compreensão maior de como é ser um adolescente trans. Para parar de alienar pessoas trans, não é realmente tão complicado, é alguém nascido no sexo errado, não é que eles "queiram" ser do sexo oposto, é o que são. Faltam informações sobre o assunto, a menos que procure, não é realmente algo sobre o qual se é educado.
I hope the audience, will have a greater understanding of what it’s like to be a transgender teenager. To stop alienating transgender people, it really isn’t that complicated, it’s someone born into the wrong gender, it’s not that they “want” to be the opposite gender, it’s what they are & identify as, period. There’s a lack of information on the subject, unless you seek out, it isn’t really something you’re educated on.
PC - Como descreve "Thje Confirmation" numa frase/ How do you describe “The Confirmation” in a single sentence?
MLD - É sobre uma mãe superprotetora, que está tentando proteger o seu filho transgênero de qualquer dano.
It’s about an overprotective mother, who is trying to safe her transgender son from any harm.
PC – Esta foi a sua primeira aventura no mundo da direção, mas tem já uma vasta experiência profissional na representação. Qual o papel que você mais gosta: o papel da atriz ou de realizadora?/ This was your first venture in the directing world, but you have a vast professional background in acting. What role do you enjoy the most: the role of the actress or of the director?
MLD - Uma das coisas mais emocionantes para mim é quando eu me perco completamente num personagem. Acho que nunca poderia desistir disso. No entanto, o espírito de equipa, o respeito, a visão de algo que você criou ganham vida diante dos seus olhos e todo o processo de criação de filmes é uma viagem que eu quero experimentar muito mais. Então, a minha resposta a esta pergunta é: espero nunca ter que decidir!
One of the most thrilling things to me is, when I completely loose myself to a character. I don’t think I could ever give that up. However, the team spirit, the respect, the seeing something you’ve created come to life right in front of your eyes and just the whole process of film making is a rush I want to experience much more of. So, my answer to this question is, I hope I never have to decide!
PC – Olhando para a sua vasta carreira, pode-nos dizer qual projeto foi o mais satisfatório para si? & Nbsp; E qual foi o mais desafiador?( Looking back at you vast career, can you tell us which project was the most fulfilling for you? And which one was the most challenging one?
MLD - The Confirmation, como resposta para as duas perguntas. Nunca tinha experimentado nenhuma das coisas que tive que enfrentar com este filme e aqui tive que fazê-lo a um nível tão alto. Felizmente, tenho uma equipa tão incrível que me ajudou!
THE CONFIRMATION for both. I had never tried any of the things I got thrown into before and I had to do it at such a high level. Thankfully I have such an incredible team working on this film!
PC - O que vem a seguir? O que podemos esperar da diretora Marie-Louise Damgaard num futuro próximo?/ What’s next for your career? What can we expect from the director Marie-Louise Damgaard in the near future?
MLD - Felizmente, pode esperar um pouco de tudo. Irei continuar a atuar, continuarei a escrever e espero que esta não seja minha última experiência como realizadora!
