O Portal Cinema esteve à conversa com Emre Akay, um dos mais curiosos cineastas turcos da atualidade que, este ano, lançou "Av: The Hunt", um intenso thriller que está a ser muito aclamado pela crítica. E importa recordar que esta obra já passou por Portugal, nomeadamente pelo MOTELx em Setembro, e onde também foi muito bem recebido. É claro que boa parte da nossa conversa centrou-se neste seu mais recente trabalho, mas também houve tempo para falar sobre o seu percurso profissional até à data e sobre os seus planos para o futuro.
Portal Cinema had the opportunity to chat with Emre Akay, one of the most interesting Turkish filmmakers of his generation. He launched this year the feature film "Av: The Hunt", an intense thriller that is being highly acclaimed by critics worldwide including by the portuguese press, after all this film was showcased in September at MOTELx. It's obvious that much of our conversation focused on this latest work, but there was also time to talk about his career so far and his plans for the future.
Portal Cinema (PC) - Em primeiro lugar gostaria de explorar a sua experiência na indústria cinematográfica! O que o levou a seguir uma carreira neste sector? Pode-nos contar qual foi, na sua opinião, o melhor momento de sua carreira no cinema até ao momento? / First of all, I would like to explore your background in the film industry! What led you to pursue a career in this industry? Can you tell us what was, in your opinion, the greatest moment in your film career so far?
Emre Akay (EA) - Para ser franco queria ser músico! Mas também sempre tive interesse por fotografia e pela escrita e, assim, comecei a minha carreira por fazer videoclipes e, depois, passei para os filmes. Acho que os filmes foram mesmo a escolha ideal, pois combinava todas estas formas de arte.
Não consigo pensar num grande momento específico em termos de carreira. Tivemos ótimos momentos durante as filmagens de AV (terríveis também). O melhor foi provavelmente durante a cena da caverna, quando finalmente a alcançamos e montamos acampamento. O cenário e a localização realmente deram a sensação de uma conquista!
I started out wanting to be a musician actually. But I was also interested in photography and writing. I started out making music videos. I think film was ideal since it combined all these art forms.
I can’t think of a specific great moment, career-wise. We had great moments during the shooting of AV (terrible ones too). The best one was probable during the cave scene, when we finally reached it and set up camp. The scenery and location really made it feel like an achievement to be shooting there.
PC - Quais são suas principais inspirações? Tem algum “herói do cinema”? / What are your main inspirations? Do you have any “film heroes”?
EA - Gosto de pensar que me inspiro em várias fontes, principalmente musicais. Também acredito fortemente na pesquisa, que também é uma grande fonte. Acho que livros, bibliotecas, arquivos e, claro, o Google também estão entre favoritos. Sempre reverenciei Kubrick e sou um fã de Welles. Num nível mais contemporâneo adoro Fincher, Haneke, PT Anderson e Lynch, mas a lista de heróis do cinema é muito mais longa do que isso. Herzog, Coen Brothers, Cronenberg, Ramsay, Kitano, Spielberg, posso continuar para sempre :)
I like to think I draw inspiration from a lot of sources, mostly musical. I also believe strongly in research, which is also a great source. So I guess books, libraries, archives and Google are also favorites.
I’ve always revered Kubrick and I’m a fan of Welles. On a more contemporary level, I love Fincher, Haneke, PT Anderson and Lynch, but the list of film heroes is much longer than that. Herzog, Coen Brothers, Cronenberg, Ramsay, Kitano, Spielberg, I can go on forever :)
PC - “Av: the Hunt” é a sua mais recente longa-metragem e, esta, surge após uma pausa algo longa desde a sua último longa-metragem. Mas “Av: the Hunt” é um pouco diferente do que fez como realizador no passado. O que o levou a criar este projeto? E qual foi a inspiração por detrás do filme? / “Av: the Hunt” is your latest feature film. It has been a while since your last feature film, and “Av: the Hunt” is a bit different from what you’ve done as a film director in the past. What led you to create this project? And what was the inspiration behind it?
EA -Acho que “AV” é o primeiro filme que é realmente meu. Já trabalhei como freelancer no passado ou co-realizei filmes de ação de muito baixo orçamento, mas este é meu primeiro filme “solo” como realizador. Co-escrevi, co-editei e também fui um dos principais produtores do projeto.
O que nos levou a escrever “AV” foram duas coisas. Em primeiro lugar, economicamente, tive vários projetos que não foram feitos simplesmente porque eram muito caros. Queríamos então escrever algo “mais barato” de produzir, mais contido, com menos personagens. (Não saiu tão barato no final, mas mesmo assim ...) A segunda inspiração foi, infelizmente, mais horrível. Há em média um “crime de honra” todos os dias na Turquia e é geralmente tolerado pela sociedade e pelo sistema de justiça. Era tão comum que estava se tornando invisível.
I think that AV is the first film that’s really mine for the first time. I’ve worked as a hired gun in the past, or co-directed very low-budget, guerilla films. This is my first “solo” film as a director. I co-wrote it, co-edited and was also one of the main producers on board. What led us to write AV were two things.
First of all, economically I had several projects that didn’t get made simply because they were too expensive. So we wanted to write something “cheaper” to produce, more contained, with less characters. (It didn’t turn out that cheap in the end but nevertheless…) The second inspiration was unfortunately more gruesome. There is on average one “honor killing” everyday in Turkey and it is mostly tolerated by society and the justice system. It was so common that it was becoming invisible.
PC – No cerne deste filme podemos encontrar uma batalha moral com algumas implicações sociais interessantes. Teve alguma hesitação em desenvolver um tema tão sensível? / At its core we can find a moral battle with some interesting social implications. Did you had any hesitations in developing such a sensitive theme?
EA - Nenhum, tematicamente falando. Pelo contrário, as implicações sociais foram o que me atraíram em primeiro lugar, já que queria fazer um filme de género com um problema real. A nossa única hesitação como escritores foi escrever uma heroína como dois co-escritores do sexo masculino. Fizemos o possível para não cair nas armadilhas do olhar masculino.
None at all, thematically speaking. On the contrary the social implications is what attracted me in the first place, and to make a genre movie with a real issue. Our only hesitation as writers was writing a female hero as two male co-writers. We did our best not to fall into the traps of the male gaze.
PC – Verdade seja dita, o Cinema Turco não é conhecido por seus filmes de terror / suspense. Acredita que este projeto pode inspirar outros cineastas turcos a começar a perseguir esses géneros? / Truth be told, Turkish Cinema is not known for its horror/ thriller films. Do you believe this project can inspire other Turkish filmmakers to start pursuing these genres?
EA - Acho que há muitos filmes de género na Turquia. Mas estão mais inclinados para o mercado nacional. Eu realmente não sei se “AV” terá esse tipo de efeito nos cineastas turcos.
I think there are a lot of Turkish genre films. But they are more inclined towards to national market. I really don’t know if AV will have that sort of effect on Turkish filmmakers.
PC - Quais foram os principais desafios que teve que enfrentar para dar vida a este filme? Está feliz com o resultado final? / What were the main challenges you had to face to bring this film to life? Are you happy with the end result?
EA - Dinheiro e tempo. Porque não tínhamos dinheiro suficiente, não tivemos tempo suficiente. Há coisas que me deixam muito feliz, outras talvez nem tanto, mas no geral estou muito orgulhoso por termos tido a paciência de superar obstáculos e suportar um inferno de desenvolvimento que durou quase 7 anos. No entanto, é uma vitória um tanto amarga, já que a pandemia dificultou a exibição do nosso filme.
Money and time. Because we didn’t have enough money, we didn’t have enough time. There are things that I’m very happy about, others less maybe but overall I’m very proud that we had the patience to overcome obstacles and endure a development hell that lasted nearly 7 years. It’s a slightly bitter victory however since the pandemic has made it difficult to screen our movie.
PC - O filme tem recebido boas críticas. Pode-nos contar o feedback que está a receber? E como convenceria um espectador a assistir a “Av: the Hunt”? / The film has been receiving some strong reviews. Can you tell us the feedback you’ve been getting? And how would you convince a spectator to watch “Av: the Hunt”?
EA- As avaliações são muito boas e só recebemos feedback positivo. Eu diria que o meu lema no cinema é “não deixe o espectador adormecer”. O meu primeiro objetivo é sempre tentar fornecer um filme que mantenha o espectador investido e interessado. Caso contrário, não há sentido em abordar as questões sociais no cinema.
The reviews are very good and we’ve only had positive feedback. I would say that my motto in filmmaking is “don’t let the spectator fall asleep”. My first goal is to always try to provide a film that keeps you invested and interested. Otherwise there’s no point in tackling social issues in film.
PC – Como acha que a pandemia de Covid-19 afetará a indústria do cinema em 2021? Como é que isso afetou os seus planos profissionais até agora? / How do you see the Covid-19 pandemic affecting the movie industry in 2021? How did affected your professional plans so far?
EA - Muito imprevisível, mas problemático, principalmente no que se refere à exibição nas salas, presumo. Gravar um filme também será muito difícil nestas condições. Foi um golpe para a maior parte da indústria e trabalhei muito menos do que o normal em 2020.
Very unpredictable, but troublesome, especially regarding theatrical I would presume. Shooting is also very difficult in these conditions. It has been a blow to most of the industry, and I’ve worked much less than normal during 2020.
PC - O que vem por aí para a sua carreira? / What’s next for your career?
EA - Estou a desenvolver outro thriller e também duas minisséries. Mas eu não sei o qual será o próximo projeto!
I’m developing another thriller and also two mini-series. But I don’t know what’s next yet.
