I would love to start by asking you what drove you to become a filmmaker? What inspired you to pursue this career ?

I grew up living between Jordan and Palestine. I wanted to become a filmmaker when I was still at school, I was 16 years old. I happened to witness the horrifying incidents of the second Intifada in Palestine.  I was always asking myself why is this happening! Why is the world so silent about it? And on top of that it was also the American Invasion of Iraq at the same time and again I was always watching the news and consuming all these images of death and destruction. At this same time, I was watching a lot of movies with my brother because we were stuck at home because of the endless curfews. He had discovered the cinema that exists outside the US mainstream sphere and I was enchanted by this world. I felt that our region, our true stories and struggle to live a normal life are not being told, so I wanted to tell them.

E o que o levou a criar este projeto?/ “200 Meters” marks your directorial debut in a feature film. How did your past experience in other projects and other roles within the industry prepared you for this challenge? And what led you to the creation of this project?

It wasn't easy for me to study film directly after high school, because my family was against it at the beginning, and we also had no film school in Palestine at that time. So, I studied nursing for 4 years! I know nursing seems far from filmmaking, but my plan was that I would be able to work as a nurse anywhere in the world as I knew that there is a global shortage of nurses. So, my idea was to have a job that I can practice anywhere so that I can work and study at the same time, and also that I have the option of working a night shift and studying during the day!

After I graduated from nursing school in 2010, I heard about a new film school in Jordan, I applied and got accepted with a scholarship! My dream came true and then in 2012, I graduated with an MA in Cinematic Studies from the Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts. And I have been working in the film industry since then. I worked in different positions in the past 10 years. My first paid job was a daily runner, then I did some assistant director, sound and editing jobs. But more or less I was mostly earning my bread from working as a freelance editor. The idea for "200 Meters" started 10 years ago in the film school. Our writing professor asked us to present interesting ideas to discuss in the writing class and she asked us to be serious about it because eventually maybe we would pick up one of those ideas and continue working on it after graduation, and I did!

What were the main challenges you faced to bring “200 Meters” to life?

The first challenge for me personally was to find the right tone to tell the story, I struggled with the writing in the sense of finding the balance where I wanted to stay honest to the story but also make it appealing and comprehended by an international audience.  The second challenge was the financing of the film which was getting very depressive at many moments. But luckily we were persistent and we knew what kind of story we wanted to tell and therefore found our partners.

The biggest challenge was to shoot the film in 22 days because that was the maximum number of days that our production could afford. Can you imagine shooting a road film in more than 35 locations in just 22 days! So, yes it was really challenging. The other difficulty was that I wanted to shoot in real locations like next to the wall and real checkpoints, and that was also a big adventure because you can not get a permit to film there so we had to make very smart plans to make it work.

E o que significa esta seleção para si?/ “200 Meters” is Jordan’s 2021 selection for the Foreign Film Oscar. How did you get the news? And what does this selection mean to you?

I read the selection email 20 times to realise it was true! I am also very happy to represent Jordan in the Oscars. As I said before, I grew up between Jordan and Palestine and I hold the citizenship of both countries. I studied film in Jordan and the script was born there as well.  I dedicate this to the whole faculty, team and alumni of the Red Sea Institute of Cinematic Arts. And a big special thanks to the Royal Film Commission of Jordan who has been part of this journey since it started 7 years ago! The selection and its presence in the media makes me very happy and excited, but stressed as well. I now know that I have to be very careful with the next project.

It’s impossible to escape the strong theme of this film, where the Palestine issue is explored via the personal drama of a father trying to reunite with his son.  What do you hope the audience can take away from this film and its strong message?

All I wanted was to bring the audience to a point where they ask two simple questions: Why is this still happening today in 2020? And are we OK with it?

Are you working on something new at the moment? How did the Covid situation impact your career?

I am working on a new script that tells the story of a boy from a dysfunctional expat family, searching for a sense of belonging, but only finding it in the virtual world and social media. But when he travels to spend his summer vacation in Jordan - his father's country - he strikes an extraordinary friendship with an old man, and he starts an adventure that would become a coming of age tale that takes us through the Jordanian mountains and forgotten myths and ruins.

The COVID situation affected the post production process big time, but we managed to pull it off and deliver the film. It also resulted in the cancellation of many festivals and turned a handful into online gigs. This is sad news to every filmmaker because we always aspire to screen our films, and be with the audience to be able to immerse in the heated discussions and reflections about our projects.
