Foi uma grande honra para o Portal Cinema ter tido a oportunidade de entrevistar Julia Von Heinz, uma das grandes cineasta do cinema alemão. Já com uma forte carreira, Julia Von Heinz apresentou este ano em Veneza e ao Mundo o seu mais recente trabalho, o thriller dramático "And Tomorrow the Entire World" que acabou por ser selecionado como o candidato da Alemanha ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro. Estamos perante um grande filme de uma grande realizadora e de uma igualmente grande equipa que apoiou Julia von Heinz nesta criação. Falamos com esta já aclamada cineasta sobre esta obra, nomeadamente sobre os seus importantes temas e o seu processo de filmagens. Acho que com esta entrevista é possível entrar um pouco na mente de Julia von Heinz e perceber o seu processo e a grande motivação para ter criado uma história tão poderosa como aquela que nos conta em "And Tomorrow the Entire World".
It was a great honor for Portal Cinema to have had the opportunity to interview Julia Von Heinz, one of the top filmmakers in today's German film industry. Already with a strong career, Julia Von Heinz presented her most recent work at this year's Venice Film Festival: the dramatic thriller "And Tomorrow the Entire World" which ended up being selected as Germany's entry for the Best Foreign Film Oscar. This is a great film by a great director and an equally great team that supported Julia von Heinz in this creation. We spoke with Von Heinz about this project, namely about its important themes and its filming process. I think that with this interview it's possible to get a little inside into Julia von Heinz's mind and understand her process and the great motivation for having created a story as powerful as the one that tells us in "And Tomorrow the Entire World".
How far one is willing to go for the sake of one's political commitment.
Portal Cinema (PC) – Gostaria de começar por falar um pouco sobre a sua carreira até hoje. Já trabalha neste setor há bastante tempo e já produziu alguns filmes bem conhecidos no mercado alemão. O que a levou a apostar numa carreira na indústria cinematográfica e quais foram os principais desafios que enfrentou para alcançar o sucesso de hoje?/ I would like to start by asking about your career. You have been working in this industry for quite some time now and have produced some well known films within the German market. How did you decided on a career in the film industry, and what were the main challenges you faced to reach were you are now?
Julia von Heinz - Os principais desafios para mim centraram-se nos factos de não ter frequentado uma escola de cinema e de ser mãe de três filhos estando na casa dos vinte. Senti que realmente tinha que provar que sou uma boa realizadora e que sou capaz de exibir bons filmes. Comecei por fazer curtas-metragens, muitas delas financiados com pouco dinheiro pessoal e com a ajuda de amigos. Quando tais projetos entravam em festivais e até ganhavam prémios foi positivo, sendo que foi nesses festivais que foi possível construir uma rede com ótimos membros para a minha equipa técnica e para o elenco, sendo que é com muitas dessas pessoas que tento trabalhar regularmente. John Quester, o meu marido e co-escritor (do filme "And Tomorrow the Entire World") e Daniela Knapp, minha diretora de fotografia, são membros fortes e importantes da minha família cinematográfica e trabalho com eles há mais de 15 anos.
The main challenges for me were that I was not on a filmschool and that I was a mother of three in my twenties. I felt like I really had to prove that I am a good director by showing good films. I started with short films, most of them financed with little money from myself and with the help of friends. When they were on festivals and won awards, it was possible for me to built a network with great teammmembers and actors, people who I try to work with again and again. John Quester, my husband and Co-Writer and Daniela Knapp, my cinematographer, are strong and important members of my film family and I work with them for more than 15 years now.
PC – Quem são seus heróis e maiores influências nesta indústria? E como se prepara para um projeto? / Who are your heroes and major influences in this industry? And how do you prepare for a filmmaking job?
Julia von Heinz - Os heróis são Susanne Bier, Andrea Arnold, Margarethe von Trotta, Jaques Audiard e tantos outros. Adoro como todos os seus filmes têm uma forte mensagem humana, mas são muito emocionais e belamente elaborados. Preparo para os meus projetos ao saber realmente tudo sobre as minhas personagens e o mundo em que vivem. Planeio cada cena do meu filme e posso reproduzi-la na minha cabeça antes de filmar. E então sinto-se à vontade para mudar tudo no set.
Heroes are Susanne Bier, Andrea Arnold, Margarethe von Trotta, Jaques Audiard and so many others. I love how their films have a strong human message but are very emotional and beautyfully crafted. I prepare for my jobs by really knowing everything about my characters and the world they live in. I plan every single shot of my film and can play it in my head before I shoot it. And than I feel free to change everything at the set.
PC - A Indústria Cinematográfica Alemã é uma das mais poderosas do mundo e, a cada ano, somos confrontados com dezenas de projetos alemães da mais alta qualidade. O seu filme foi selecionado como o candidato da Alemanha ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro e isso diz muito sobre a qualidade do seu projeto. Como é que se sente vendo o seu nome ao lado de incríveis mestres do cinema alemão? E como reagiu à notícia dessa seleção?/ The German Film Industry is one of the most powerful of the world and, each year, we are presented with dozens of German projects of the highest quality. Your film was selected as Germany’s entry for the Foreign Film Oscar category and that says a lot about the quality of your project. How do you feel having your name side by side with amazing masters of German Cinema? And how did you reacted to the news of this selection?
Julia von Heinz - Fiquei surpresa e feliz. A notícia chegou numa noite muito estranha quando estava a discursar perante uma platéia num festival de cinema local. Sabia que aquela seria a última exibição do meu filme antes do segundo confinamento provocado pelo Covid-19. E durante a sessão o meu telefone tocou. E vi que era o meu produtor, então respondi no meio das perguntas e respostas dizendo ao público que era uma chamada importante. E ele apenas me disse: "Somos nós, Julia! Eles escolheram-nos!". Fiquei muito feliz e imediatamente compartilhei a notícia com o público. Mas devo confesar que me sinto dilacerada desde então, porque sinto a profunda tristeza de o meu filme não poder ser apresentado atualmente nos cinemas - sobra o passado onde foram quatro dias com sessões esgotadas em 140 cidades. E a enorme sorte, claro está, de o ver como candidato alemão aos Óscares.
I was so surprised and so happy. The news came on a very strange evening: I was satnding in front of an audience on a local film festival. I knew it would be the last screening with my attendence before the second Covid-lockdown. And my phone rang. I saw it was my producer so I answered it in the middle of the Q&A telling the audience that this was an important call. And he only said: "It’s us, Julia! They chose us!". I was so happy and immediately shared the news with the audience.
I feel torn since then. The deep sadness that my film can not be shown in Cinemas at the moment – we had four days with sold out screenings in 140 cities. And the enormous luck to be the german Oscar contender.
PC – Antes da seleção de "And Tomorrow the Entire World" como candidato aos Óscares pela Alemanha, este filme incrível foi selecionado para fazer parte da Seleção Oficial do Festival de Cinema de Veneza, onde recebeu imensos elogios! Como foi apresentar este seu filme num grande festival de cinema como Veneza?/ Before the selection of “And Tomorrow the Entire World” as Germany’s Oscar Candidate, this amazing film was selected to be part of the Official Selection of the Venice Film Festival where it received numerous praises! How was showcasing your film in a major film festival like Venice?
Julia von Heinz - Foi importante. Fiz o filme a pensar num público alemão, estando convicta a contar uma história bem alemã. E em Veneza aprendemos que contamos uma história universal. Jornalistas da Polônia, Bélgica, Itália, Reino Unido, EUA e França contaram-me como reagiram ao filme e como o que é retratado também reflete a situação no seu país.
That was huge. I had made the film with a German audience in my mind. Convinced to tell a very German story. And in Venice we learned that we have told a universal story. Journalists from Poland, Belgium, Italy, U.K., USA and France told me how it also reflects the situation in their country.
PC – Vamos então falar um pouco mais sobre o “And Tomorrow the Entire Worl”. O que nos pode contar sobre o desenvolvimento de sua história e quais foram as suas inspirações? / Let us talk in a bit more detailed about the “And Tomorrow the Entire World”.. What can you tell us about the development of its story and were your inspirations behind it?
Julia von Heinz - Estive em um grupo Antifa durante dez anos na década de 1990. Foi uma época muito intensa onde que conheci o meu marido e muitos amigos próximos. O fascismo era um fenómeno novo e sabíamos que não podíamos desviar o olhar, tínhamos que reagir, especialmente como alemães na terceira geração após a era nazi. Sempre quis fazer um filme sobre aquele período importante da minha vida e comecei por escrever o argumento deste filme há 20 anos atrás. Mas eu ainda estava muito perto do assunto. Levamos anos para encontrar a maneira certa de contar esta história. Queríamos promover uma paz histórica, mas há cinco anos atrás a situação na Alemanha mudou. O fascismo ressurgiu. Tínhamos que colocar esta história aqui e agora perante o público.
I was in an Antifa group for ten years in the 1990's decade. That was a very intense time were I met my husband and many close friends. Fascism was a new phenomena than and we knew we couldn’t look away, we had to react, specially as germans in the third generation after the Nazi Era. I've always wanted to make a film about that important period of my life and started to write a script about it 20 years ago. But I was still too close to the subject. It took us years to find the right way to tell that story. We wanted to make a historical peace, but five years ago the situation in Germany changed. Fascism rose again. We had to put that story in the here and now.
PC - O filme explora mensagens fortes sobre temas políticos e sociológicos. Portanto, não foi uma surpresa vê-lo na disputa pelo Queer Lion e Leão de Ouro em Veneza. O que o levou a abordar questões tão fortes e importantes no filme? E como você acha que o público está reagindo à forma como você os conta? / The film has strong messages regarding political and sociological themes. So it wasn’t a surprise to see it in contention for the Queer Lion and the Golden Lion in Venice. What led you to tackle such strong and important issues in the film? And how do you think the audience is reacting to your storytelling of them?
Julia von Heinz - Tenho sentido reações muito fortes por parte do público. Sempre foi importante para nós fazer um filme que não fosse para “educar” o público. Tem que ser um filme emocional! Tem que ser tenso e divertido. Queríamos fazer um filme para uma geração mais jovem que fosse muito mais político do que a minha geração. E acho que conseguimos.
I have very strong reactions from the audience. It was always important for us to make a film which is not “educating” the audience. It has to be emotional! It has to be tense and entertaining. We wanted to make a film for a younger generation which is far more political than my generation. And I think we managed.
PC - Quais foram os principais desafios que teve que enfrentar para finalizar este filme? Na minha opinião, uma grande parte do sucesso do filme depende do trabalho dp seu talentoso elenco. Como o selecionou e como foi trabalhar com eles?/ What were the main challenges you had to face to bring this film to completion? In my opinion one big part of the film’s success rests on the work of its talented cast. How do you select the cast and how was to work with them?
Julia von Heinz - É claro que as capacidades de representação que os atores demonstraram nos castings foram as mais importantes para decidir quem deveria estar no filme ou não. Mas também conversei muito com os atores. Sobre o enquadramento político. Sobre violência. Sobre amizade - grupos e isolamento. E aqueles que estão no filme responderam fortemente à minha história. Não podíamos pagar muito ao elenco, nem à equipa técnica. Então, todos que fazem parte do filme têm realmente uma grande paixão pelo mesmo. Eles decidiram ficar comigo em vez de estarem noutro lugar onde poderiam até ter ganho mais dinheiro. Toda aquela paixão e energia transparecem no filme.
Of course the acting skills in the casting sessions were most important for me to decide who should be in the film. But I also talked so much with the actors. About political engagement. About violence. About friendship – groups and isolation. And those who are in the film responded so strongly to my story. We could not pay much at all to cast and crew. So everybody who is part of the film is really passionate about the project. They chose to be with me instead of somewhere else where they could have earned more money. All that passion and energy shows in the film.
PC – Para terminar gostaria de perguntar se está a trabalhar em algo novo?
Julia von Heinz - Terminei o meu argumento da minha estreia internacional intitulada "Iron Box", baseado numa obra da autora best-seller Lily Brett. Será filmado na Polónia com dois atores americanos. Está, para já, a ser um processo que corre bem e estou ansiosa para começar filmar assim que a Covid-19 o permitir.
I have finished my script for my international debut, "Iron Box" by the bestselling author Lily Brett. It will be shot in Poland with two american actors. It is on a very good way and I look so forward to shoot it as soon as Covid allows.
