A Irlanda ainda procura chegar ao lote final de nomeados ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro (Em 2015, "Viva" chegou à Shortlist) e, este ano, deposita grandes esperanças em "Arracht", um drama que nos transporta até uma das épocas mais difíceis para o povo irlandês: A Grande Fome. O protagonista desta obra é Dónall Ó Héalai, uma das grandes promessas da representação irlandesa e cuja performance neste drama tem sido largamente elogiada. Falamos com Dónall Ó Héalai sobre a sua participação e o seu exigente papel neste sublime drama humano que tem merecido todos os elogios conquistados! E graças a esta conversa conseguimos compreender melhor os desafios deste belo projeto que consegue sobressair o grande talento que de Ó Héalai.
Ireland is still looking to reach the final list of nominees for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film ("Viva" reached the Shortlist in 2015) and, this year, it has high hopes for "Arracht", a drama that takes us back to one of the most difficult times for the Irish people: The Great Famine. The star of this film is Dónall Ó Héalai, one of the biggest promises of Irish acting, and whose performance in this drama has been widely praised. We spoke with Dónall Ó Héalai about his participation and his demanding role in this sublime human drama that has earned all the praises it received! And thanks to this conversation, we were able to better understand the challenges that this beautiful project imposed, challenges that managed to highlight the great talent of Ó Héalai.

Portal Cinema (PC) - Nos últimos anos participou em alguns projetos curiosos que serviram para aumentar a sua reputação na Irlanda e no Reino Unido. Olhando para trás, para a sua carreira até agora, pode-nos dizer qual foi, na sua opinião, o seu maior destaque? / In the past few years you’ve starred in some curious projects and you’ve been growing your reputation in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Looking back at your career so far, can you name what was, in your opinion, your biggest highlight?
Dónall Ó Héalai - Acho que “Arracht” foi o grande destaque até ao momento. Entre a experiência de interpretar a história e a participação nas filmagens, bem com depois disso tudo ter sido considerado como uma das Estrelas do Amanhã pelo Screendaily, toda a experiência que envolveu “Arracht” foi um grande destaque na minha carreira.
I think “Arracht “has been the highlight to date. From the story to the shooting experience and then from that to have been included as one of Screendaily’s Stars of Tomorrow it’s certainly been a career highlight so far.
PC – O curioso “Arracht” é o candidato da Irlanda ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro e tem recebido muitos elogios por conta da sua interpretação. Pode-nos contar como se envolveu neste projeto? E o que acha que a sua entrada no lote de candidatos ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro pode fazer por este filme?/ The curious “Arracht” is Ireland’s entry for the Foreign Film Oscar and you have been receiving lots of praise for your performance in it. Can you tells us how you got involved in this project? And what do you think the Foreign Film submission can do for this film?
Dónall Ó Héalai - Envolvi-me no filme através do realizador Tom Sullivan. Tinha feito um curta-metragem com o Tom e a Kate McCullough (“Arracht” DOP) há alguns anos e estava muito ansioso para voltar a trabalhar com os dois. Tom é um dos melhores contadores de histórias visuais que conheço - um verdadeiro talento. Já a Kate McCullough é uma das cineastas mais talentosas da atualidade e, por isso, estava muito interessado em trabalhar com eles novamente.
Ter o filme escolhido como o representante irlandês ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro é uma grande honra. Acho que vai ajudar a divulgá-lo junto de um público que, de outra forma, nunca ouviria falar dele.
I got involved in the film through the director Tom Sullivan. I had done a shortfilm with Tom and Kate McCullough (Arracht DOP) a couple of years ago and was very keen to work with them both again. Tom is one of the best visual storytellers I know – a real talent. Kate McCullough is one of the most talented cinematogrophers working at the moment so I really wanted to work with them again.
Being put forward as the Irish selection for Best International film is a great honor. I think it will help in getting the film out there to audiences that otherwise might not hear about it.
PC– Como descreve a sua personagem Coleman Sharkey? Que desafios teve que enfrentar para dar vida a esta complexa personagem?/ How do you describe your character Coleman Sharkey? What challenges you had to face to bring this complex character to life?
Dónall Ó Héalai - O Coleman é uma grande personagem e foi um papel incrível de interpretar. Desde a primeira vez que li o argumento percebi como era uma personagem expansiva. Da sua relação com a terra e o mar - pertencente a uma geração irlandesa mais velha que conseguia sobreviver em qualquer ambiente, em qualquer condição devido à sua teimosia, determinação e coração. É raro um ator ter a oportunidade de interpretar alguém que passa por uma transformação física tão significativa provocada pela perda de peso e este foi, provavelmente, um dos aspectos mais desafiantes deste papel.
Coleman was an incredible role to portray. From the very first time I read the script, I was aware of how expansive a character he was. From his relationship with the land and sea – belonging to an older Irish generation who were able to survive in any environment, in any condition due to his sheer stubbornness, determination and heart. It’s rare that you get to play someone who experiences such a significant physical transformation by weight loss within their arc - that was probably one of the most challenging aspects of bringing him to life.
PC – E como foi trabalhar com o guionista/realizador Tom Sullivan?/ And how was working with the writer/director Tom Sullivan
Dónall Ó Héalai - O processo colaborativo que se vive nas filmagens é bem capaz de ser o meu aspecto favorito deste trabalho. Tive muita sorte com os realizadores com quem trabalhei até agora, pois sempre estiveram abertos a ideias e abordagens diferentes sobre as personagens que interpretei. O Tom (Sullivan) convido-me para fazer parte da equipa criativa de uma forma significativa em “Arracht”. E como ator realmente não existe nada melhor do que esta validação e colaboração. Posso dizer que lhe devo muito.
The collaborative process of filmmaking might be my favourite aspect of the work. I have been very lucky with the directors I have worked with so far in that they have been open to ideas and different approaches about the characters I’ve played. Tom (Sullivan) invited me to be a part of the creative team in a significant and meaningful way with Arracht. As an actor – it really doesn’t get any better than that. I owe him a lot.
PC – Pode-nos descrever, nas suas próprias palavras, o filme “Arracht”? Qual seria o seu principal argumento de venda para levar o espectador a dar uma oportunidade a este filme?/ Can you describe, in your own words, “Arracht”? What would be your top selling point to make audiences see this film?
Dónall Ó Héalai -Ambientado em Connemara em 1845, “Arracht” (‘Monstro’) conta a história da luta de um homem pela sanidade e sobrevivência durante a Grande Fome. O filme segue os dilemas de uma personagem chamada Colman Sharkey enquanto a Fome o afeta. Colman é assombrado por um crime que não cometeu. Incapaz de manter a sua família viva, ele é absorvido pela escuridão até que a inocência de uma menina o traz de volta à vida. É um retrato do indomável instinto de sobrevivência do espírito humano
Set in Connemara in 1845, "Arracht" (‘Monster’) tells the story of a man’s struggle for sanity and survival during the Great Famine. The film follows a character called Colman Sharkey as the famine is tightening its grip. Colman is hunted and haunted for a crime he didn’t commit. Unable to keep his family alive he is subsumed by darkness until a little girl ultimately brings him back to life. A portrayal of the indomitable survival instinct of the human spirit
PC – Por último gostaria de lhe perguntar o que se segue na sua carreira? E acredita que “Arracht” e sua escolha para representar a Irlanda nos Óscares abrir-lhe-ão ainda mais portas?/ Lastly I would like to ask you what’s next for your career? And do you believe “Arracht” and its Ireland’s Oscar selection will open even more doors for you?
Dónall Ó Héalai - O próximo projeto é um longa-metragem intitulada “Foscadh” / “Shelter” que estará no circuito internacional de festivais de cinema em 2021. Acredito que “Arracht” me tenha aberto mais portas. Sinto-me grato pelo compromisso de todos os que estiveram envolvidos no filme, pois foi o seu trabalho árduo e foco que transformou o filme no sucesso que é.
Next is a feature film called “Foscadh”/”Shelter” which will be on the international film festival circuit in 2021. I think Arracht has certainly opened more doors for me. I feel thankful for everyone’s commitment who was involved in the film as it was their hard work and focus that have made the film what it is.
