In late 2020, we had a fantastic conversation with Stiaan Smith, the protagonist of the romantic drama "Toorbos", South Africa's entry for the Foreign Language Film Oscar. We also spoke recently with Elani Dekker, the other star of this beautiful romantic drama. Like Smith, Elani Dekker gives a strong touch to this beautiful film that is an adaptation of a famous South African novel. We talked to this talented actress about her career, but above all about her great performance in this drama that you cannot miss.
The story of "Toorbos" explores the uprooting of a young forest woman and her community during the time of the last forest inhabitants of South Africa's Knysna forest of the 1930's.
PC – O que nos pode contar sobre a sua carreira até agora? O que o levou a seguir uma carreira na indústria do cinema?/ What can you tell us about your career so far? What led you to pursue a career in the acting industry?
Elani Dekker - Desde que me lembro que adoro histórias. E tudo o que sempre quis fazer foi contar histórias. O meu plano inicial era fazer parte da equipa de filmagem, mas arepresentação entrou inesperadamente na minha vida e tem sido um amor profundo desde então. Recebi uma bolsa de estudos para um curso de Verão na The New York Film Academy em Nova York quando tinha 16 anos. Quando regressei à Àfrica do Sul comecei a trabalhar como atriz de forma profissional.
Since I can remember I've loved stories. And all I've ever wanted to do is be a part of telling stories. My initial plan was to go into the crew side of filming but unexpectedly acting came into my life and has been a deep love for me ever since.I received a scholarship for a summer school class at The New York Film Academy in New York when I was 16 years old When I came back from there I started working professionally.
PC - Quais são as suas principais inspirações e influências na indústria cinematográfica?/ What are your main inspirations and influences in the film industry?
Elani Dekker - Tenho alguns ídolos, como Toby Cronje e Sandra Prinsloo. Também me inspiro em pessoas extraórdinárias como Quentin Tarantino, Judd Apatow e Greta Gerwig.
I have a few local role-models, like Toby Cronje and Sandra Prinsloo. I'm also inspired by people like Quentin Tarantino, Judd Apatow and Greta Gerwig.
PC - Vamos falar sobre o seu último papel de atriz no drama romântico “Toorbos”. O que nos pode contar sobre este projeto e como se envolveu nele? Lets talk about your latest acting role in the romantic drama “Toorbos”. What can you tell us about this project and how did you got involved in it? And how was working with the director Rene van Rooyen?
Elani Dekker - Passei por algumas fases de casting e quando finalmente consegui o papel sabia que este projeto seria excepcionalmente especial. Esta história é sobre Karoliena, uma "bosmens" lindamente única que, ao longo de um período de 10 anos, atravessa os desafios da vida para descobrir a sua força e sabedoria interior. Ela é uma jovem inteligente com uma forte intuição e vontade. Ela foi criada na reclusão da floresta de Knysna e tem um amor profundamente enraizado pelo seu lar. Quando ela se apaixona por um homem muito respeitado na cidade, ela tem que estar disposta a deixar de lado a 'floresta dentro dela' e se tornar alguém aceitável para os outros no seio da sociedade. Ela passa por sua própria jornada para saber quem ela é e o que ela representa, sem se conformar com as expectativas dos outros.
A René foi absolutamente incrível no processo de criação deste filme. Não consigo pensar em ninguém melhor para ter traduzido este romance num argumento e num filme. Ela realmente entendeu quais são os elementos centrais desta história e certificou-se de que esses elementos fossem tão evidentes no filme.
I went through quite a few audition phases and when I finally got the role I knew that this project would be exceptionally special. This story is about Karoliena is a beautifully unique "bosmens" who, over a period of 10 years, goes through life's challenges to uncover her strength and inner wisdom. She is an intelligent young girl with a strong intuition and will. She is raised in the seclusion of the Knysna forest and has a deep rooted love for her home in it. When she falls in love with a highly respected man in town, she has to be willing to let go of the 'forest in her' and become someone acceptable to others in society. She goes through her own journey of knowing who she is and what she stands for without conforming to other's expectations.
Also, René was absolutely incredible at creating this film. I can't think of anyone better to have translated this novel into a screenplay. She really understood what the core elements of this story is and made sure that those elements are just as evident in the film.
PC – Como descreve a sua personagem Karoliena? E quais foram os principais desafios que enfrentou durante o processo de filmagem? E como foi trabalhar com o seu coprotagonista Stiaan Smith? How do you describe your character Karoliena? And what were the main struggles you’ve faced during the filming process? And how was working with your co-star Stiaan Smith?
Elani Dekker - Acho que a Karoliena é, definitivamente, uma feminista forte que dá um belo exemplo às jovens de hoje em termos de como defender o que tu acreditas, não se conformando com o que os outros esperam que tu sejas. Acompanhamos a jornada de Karoliena por um período de cerca de 10 anos. Ela passa por diferentes fases e situações em que é constantemente confrontada com as expectativas dos outros, com o que ela "deve" fazer e sentir e com o que realmente pensa e sente. A beleza da escrita de Dalene Matthee é que todos os seus personagens são maravilhosamente complexos e às vezes se contradizem como as pessoas reais costumam fazer, então em Karoliena as pessoas verão como a força e a fraqueza, a sabedoria e a tolice existem dentro de todos nós - é o que escolhemos manter e deixe de lado esse assunto.
Adorei trabalhar com o Stiaan. Ele tem uma forma maravilhosa de ver as histórias e tornar os personagens autênticos e reais. Nós nos encontramos pela primeira vez neste projeto e realmente espero que haja muitos mais!
I think Karoliena was definitely a strong feminist who sets a beautiful example to young ladies today in terms of how to stand for what you believe in and not to conform to what others expect you to be. We follow Karoliena's journey over a period of about 10 years. She goes through different phases and situations where she is constantly faced with other's expectations of her, what she 'ought' to do and feel and what she really thinks and feels. The beauty of Dalene Matthee's writing is that all her characters are wonderfully complex and sometimes contradicts themselves as real people often do, so in Karoliena people will hopefully see how strength and weakness, wisdom and foolishness exists inside us all - it's what we choose to hold on to and let go of that matters.
We shot this film deep inside the Knysna Forest in the middle of winter! So for me having to run in the rain and wear thin worn-out clothes was quite challenging. I loved working with Stiaan. He has a wonderful way of looking at stories and making characters authentic and real. We met for the first time on this project and I truly hope that there will be many more!
PC – Qual a sua opinião sobre “Toorbos“? Como o descreveria ao público? What is your opinion regarding “Toorbos “? How do you describe it to the audiences?
Elani Dekker - "Toorbos" é sobre encontrar e confiar na sua própria identidade e verdade. É sobre uma jovem que nasceu e foi criada na floresta de Knysna nos anos 1930. Ela tem um amor profundamente enraizado pela floresta e por toda a vida que nela existe, mas também se apaixona por um homem de "classe alta" da cidade. Ela então vê-se envolvida num triângulo amoroso único entre o que ela realmente quer e o que os outros dizem que ela deve fazer.
É uma bela e única história de amor que se passa numa época e lugar diferentes do que muitos de nós já vimos. Essa história mudou a minha vida e me mostrou como a força silenciosa está dentro de cada um de nós. Um tema forte ao longo deste filme é como temos que lidar com o medo e a incerteza - que é exatamente o que o mundo experimentou no ano passado. Eu realmente espero que isso incentive e eleve as pessoas, especialmente nestes tempos difíceis.
Toorbos is about finding and trusting your own identity and truth. It's about a young girl who was born and raised in the Knysna forest in the 1930's. She has a deeply rooted love for the forest and all the life that is in it but also falls in love with a "upper class" man in town. She then finds herself in a unique love-triangle between what she truly wants and what other's tell her she should do.
It's a unique and beautiful love story set in a different time and place than what many of us have ever seen. This story has changed my life and shown me how quiet strength lays within each of us. A strong theme throughout this film is how we have to deal with fear and uncertainty - which is exactly what the world has been experienced this past year. I really hope that it will encourage and uplift people, especially in these challenging times.

Como recebeu a notícia e comi acha que isto poderá ajudar este filme?/ The film was selected to be South Africa’s entry for the Foreign Film Oscar. How did you get the news and what do you feel it will do for this film?
Elani Dekker - Lembro-me que Rene, a nossa realizadora, tentou telefonar-me. Lembro-me de ter dito na brincadeira que "ela provavelmente quer nos contar sobre o nosso filme que pode ganhar um Oscar"! Mal eu sabia! É uma honra incrível ter o reconhecimento do nosso país e estamos muito gratos por ser a seleção da África do Sul para este ano.
Espero que mais e mais pessoas sejam inspiradas por esta história bem fundamentada e realista, ambientada numa época em que apenas estar debaixo de uma árvore já era o suficiente e que todos seremos encorajados a 'ficar quietos' de vez em quando.
When I saw that Rene, our director, had tried to phone me, I remember jokingly saying that "she probably wants to tell us something about our Oscar winning movie" haha little did I know! It's such an incredible honour to be recognised by our country and we're so grateful to be the SA selection for this year.
I hope that more and more people will be inspired by this grounded, down to earth story set in a time when just being under a tree was enough and that we will all be encouraged to 'be still' every now and again.
PC – É uma pergunta difícil tendo em conta os tempos imprevisíveis em que vivemos, mas tem planos para o futuro?/ It’s a hard question taking into consideration the unpredictable times we’re living in, but do you have any plans for what you’ll do next?
Elani Dekker - Se 2020 me ensinou alguma coisa, é que nada é certo e temos que aproveitar tudo onde quer que estejamos, já que este é o maior presente que nos podemos dar a nós próprios. Por isso, por agora, não tenho nenhum plano específico e estou a aprendet a deixar para lá e confiar que tudo dará certo.
If 2020 has taught me anything it is that nothing is certain and enjoying wherever you're at is the biggest gift you can give yourself. So for now I don't have any specific plans and I'm learning to let go and trust that all will work out.
