Stiaan Smith is a South African actor and writer who recently shone at the highest level in "Toorbos", a beautiful romantic drama that was selected by South Africa as the country's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. With a different setting from most of the other Oscar contenders, "Toorbos" is clearly a film that stands out and shines at the highest level. The performances by Stiaan Smith and his co-star, Elani Dekker, have been highly praised and helped to elevate this beautiful project. In this interview with Stiaan Smith, we've talked about his professional relationship with Elani Dekkeer and with the director Rene van Rooyen, but also about the acting challenges imposed by this drama that's inspired by one of the most acclaimed books of South African literature.
Portal Cinema (PC) – Adoraria começar por lhe perguntar sobre a sua experiência profissional. O que o levou a seguir uma carreira na indústria do cinema? E quais são suas principais inspirações? I would love to start by asking about your professional background. Why did you decide to embark on a career in the film industry? And what are your main inspirations?
Stiaan Smith - Saí-me até muito bem na escola e houve muita pressão para que seguisse uma carreira profissional e me formasse (o que acabei por fazer como uma opção “reserva”). Mas ter feito parte de um grupo de teatro na escola acabou por influenciar os meus interesses. Senti que havia muitos aspectos desafiadores para contar histórias e muito para oferecer. Não sei realmente de onde vem a minha inspiração, mas se fosse pressionado para dar uma resposta, então provavelmente diria algo como quietude, natureza ou música.
I did very well in school and there was a lot of pressure for me to pursue a professional career and get a degree (which I eventually did as a “fallback” option). But having been part of a drama group in school kind shaped my interests, and I felt like there was so many challenging aspects to storytelling, and so much to offer. I don’t really know where my inspiration comes from, but if I was pushed for an answer I’ll probably say something like stillness, or nature, or music.
The story of "Toorbos" explores the uprooting of a young forest woman and her community during the time of the last forest inhabitants of South Africa's Knysna forest of the 1930's.
PC – Recentemente protagonizou “Toorbos”, um filme que foi selecionado pela a África do Sul para concorrer ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro, e pelo qual, juntamente com sua co-protagonista Elani Dekker, têm recebido elogios pelas suas atuações. Como se envolveu neste projeto? / You recently starred in “Toorbos ”, a film that was selected as South Africa’s entry for the Foreign Film Oscar for which you and your partner Elani Dekker have been receiving praises for your performances. How did you get involved in this project?
Stiaan Smith - Foi um procedimento normal de casting. E então recebi um telefonema para uma nova audição, onde li o papel com a Elani (que também é onde nos conhecemos oficialmente) e tivemos uma conexão definitiva desde o primeiro momento.
It was the normal straight forward auditioning procedure. And then I got a callback where I got to read with Elani (which is also where we officially met) and we had a definite connection from the first moment.
PC - O que acha que a candidatura ao Óscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro pode fazer por este filme e quantas portas serão abertas devido a esta seleção?/ What do you think the Foreign Film submission can do for this film and how many doors will be open for the film due to this selection?
Stiaan Smith - É interessante olhar para um filme como "Toorbos" e ver o quanto trabalho árduo o realizador e todos os vários departamentos tiveram para que este se tornasse num filme de alto padrão, apesar dos desafios que enfrentamos numa indústria cinematográfica em desenvolvimento com recursos muito limitados. E então ter a oportunidade de ser mostrado a um público maior ... isso é enorme e realmente deixa-e muito feliz por todos os envolvidos.
Looking at a film like Toorbos - to see how much hard work the director and all the various departments put in - for it to become a film of such high standard, despite the challenges you face in a devopling film industry with very limited resources, and then to have an opportunity for it to be shown to a larger audience... that’s massive and really makes me so happy for everyone involved.
PC – Como descreve "Toorbos"/ E o que é que o espectador pode aprender com o filme?/ How do you describe “Toorbos ”? And what do you think the audience can learn from this film?
Stiaan Smith - "Toorbos" (traduzido livremente para Floresta Mágica) desenrola-se na floresta Knysa durante a década de 1930. A sua história gira em redor da vida de Karoliena (uma jovem que vive com o povo da floresta) e Johannes (um homem da cidade que chegou ao sucesso sozinho), que deseja casar-se com ela e, no processo, resgatá-la da pobreza. "Toorbos" é sobre o nosso relacionamento com a natureza e como esquecemos, como sociedade, o poder que reside em ter uma conexão com a mãe terra. É sobre as lutas pelo poder nos relacionamentos românticos e como não podes forçar ninguém a amar-te.
"Toorbos" representa a defesa de tudo o que acreditas ... Eu acho que, não importa onde estiveres a viver, sempre haverá a possibilidade de que acreditamos em certas coisas apenas porque a sociedade nos disse que é a coisa certa para acreditar. E os que mais respeito na vida são os que têm coragem de continuar a fazer perguntas e a desenterrar os falsos pressupostos que sempre parecem prevalecer.
"Toorbos" (loosely translated - Magic Forest) is set in the Knysa forest during the 1930’s. It revolves around the life of Karoliena (a young girl living with the forest people) and Johannes (the self-made city man) who wishes to marry her and in the process rescue her from poverty. "Toorbos" is about our relationship with nature, and how we have forgotten, as a society, the power that lies within having a connection to mother earth. It’s about the power struggles in romantic relationships, and how you can’t force someone to love you.
"Toorbos" is about standing up for what you believe... I think, no matter where or when you are living, there will always be the possibility that we are going to believe certain things merely because society has told us that it is the right thing to believe. And the ones who I have the most respect for in life, are those who find the courage to continue asking questions and keep unearthing the false assumptions that always seem to prevail.
PC – E o que nos pode dizer sobre a sua personagem? Que desafios é que enfrentou para a interpretar?/ And what can you tell us about your character? What challenges you had to face to bring this to life?
Stiaan Smith - Johannes é um importante homem de negócios de Knysna. Ele também cresceu na floresta, na pobreza, mas conseguiu libertar-se dessa vida com preservação e determinação. Quando conhece Karoliena e a pede em casamento, ele acredita que é ele quem a está a salvar e ficou cego pelo poder mágico que a floresta possui. E é por meio dessa conexão que Karoliena o leva de volta ao seu verdadeiro eu.
O filme é baseado num livro. Um dos quatro livros aclamados pela crítica ambientados na floresta de Knysna, de um autor sul-africano muito prolífico - Daleen Matthee. Então acho que o maior desafio para mim foi esquecer a pressão de trazer um desses personagens conhecidos à vida ... ir para a história e abordar o personagem como eu faria com qualquer outro.
Johannes is a prominent business man from Knysna. He also grew up in the forest, in poverty, but managed to free himself from that life through preserverance and determination. When he meets Karoliena and asks her to marry him, he believes he is the one saving her, and has become blinded to the magical power that the forest holds. And it it is through this connection, that Karoliena eventually leads him back to his true self.
The film is based on a book. One of four critically acclaimed books set in the Knysna forest, by a very prolific South African author – Daleen Matthee. So I think the biggest challenge for me was to forget about the pressure of bringing one of these well known characters to life... going to the story and approaching the character like I would any other.
PC – E como foi trabalhar com a sua co-protagonista Elani Dekker?/ And how was working with director Rene van Royen and your co–star Elani Dekker?
Stiaan Smith - René é uma cineasta maravilhosa que realmente se esforça para que os seus atores se sintam à vontade. Isto tornou mais fácil explorar e arriscar. Também parece que ela conta histórias com o coração, e não com a cabeça - que é a razão exata pela qual "Toorbos" já atingiu tantos corações!
Diverti-me muito com a Elani. Ela é intimidantemente talentosa e manteve-me sempre alerta. Ela nunca faz algo da mesma maneira duas vezes e não diria uma frase se não acreditasse. Então, cada take é fresco e entregue em qualquer momento, o que também me ajudou imenso a estar presente.
René is a wonderful director who really makes an effort to make her actors feel at ease. That made it easy to explore and take chances. It also feels like she tells stories with her heart, rather than her head - which is the exact reason why "Toorbos" has hit home with so many viewers already!
I had a lot of fun working with Elani. She is intimidatingly talented, and she kept me on my toes. She never does something the same way twice, and wouldn’t say a line if she doesn’t believe it. So every take is fresh and delivered from whatever the moment provided, which also helped me a lot to stay present.
PC – Por fim gostava de lhe perguntar o que se segue na sua carreira?/ Lastly I would like to ask you what’s next for your career?
Stiaan Smith - Neste momento estou concentrado na minha escrita e espero poder terminar o meu próximo argumento num futuro próximo.
Currently I’m focussing on my writing, and hopefully I’ll be able to finish my next screenplay in the near future.
