O filme de terror "Ten Minutes to Midnight" faz parte da programação do FantasPorto 2021 (entretanto adiado para a Primavera) e será exibido, em estreia nacional, no TVCINE Action ainda neste mês de Fevereiro. Falamos com o seu realizador, Erik Bloomquist, sobre este curioso projeto que recupera o tema do vampirismo e, como o próprio faz questão de reforçar na entrevista, tem algumas inspirações na saga "The Twilight Zone".
The horror film "Ten Minutes to Midnight" is part of the FantasPorto 2021 program (meanwhile postponed until Spring), but it will be showcases, in a nacional premiere, on TVCINE Action Channel later this February. We spoke with Erik Bloomquist (Director), about this curious project that recovers the theme of vampirism and, as the director reinforced in the interview, draws ssome inspirations in the saga "The Twilight Zone".
PC – Gostaria de começar por perguntar porque é que decidiu seguir uma carreira na indústria cinematográfica. Quais são as suas principais inspirações e influências?/ I would like to start by asking how did you decided to pursue a career in the film industry? What are your main inspirations and influences?
Erik Bloomquist - Cresci no palco.Em novo fiz várias atuações teatrais e, depois, passei para o cinema e para a televisão. E então surgiu o desejo de realizar as minhas próprias histórias, seja como realizador, guionista ou produtor.
I grew up doing a ton of stage acting which transitioned into film and television and then the desire to helm my own stories with writing, directing, and producing.
PC – A sua primeira longa-metragem “Long Lost” foi um sucesso no circuito de festivais de cinema. Como é que este filme se compara a este segundo, “Ten Minutes to Midnight”, e como é que o ajudou a se preparar para este novo desafio? / Your first feature film “Long Lost” was a success in the film festival circuit. How did this film compares to this second one, “Ten Minutes to Midnight”, and how did it helped you prepare for this new challenge?
Erik Bloomquist - Com a COVID enfrentamos um desafio ímpar de dar a este filme (muito pensado para o circuito de festivais e para o público presencial) o nascimento que almejava e exigia. Fizemos várias parcerias com algumas pessoas e organizações incríveis (incluindo Popcorn Frights para a nossa estreia mundial esgotada no formato drive-in) e auto-agendamos um lançamento nos cinemas em 60 cidades nos Estados Unidos que permitiu exibições especiais salpicadas por toda a parte. Um exercício verdadeiramente rebelde que se encaixa perfeitamente no espírito do filme!
With COVID, we faced a unique challenge to give this film (which was very much designed for the festival circuit and in-person audiences) the birth it desired and demanded. We partnered with some awesome people and organizations (including Popcorn Frights for our sold out world premiere at the drive-in) and self-booked a 60 city theatrical rollout across the United States with special even screenings peppered throughout. A truly rebellious exercise which totally fits the spirit of the movie!
PC - O que nos pode dizer sobre “Ten Minutes to Midnight” e como teve a ideia? Como o descreve ao público?/ What can you tell us about “Ten Minutes to Midnight” and how did you came up with the idea for it? How do you describe it to the audiences?
Erik Bloomquist - Nós inspiramos-nos na "The Twilight Zone" e em Stephen King. Queríamos que este filme parecesse um episódio prolongado de um programa de antologia de terror noturno!
We took inspiration from The Twilight Zone and Stephen King. We wanted this movie to feel like an extended episode of a late night horror anthology program!
PC - Quais foram as suas inspirações para desenvolver a vibe dark do filme? Que desafios é que o filme impôs?/ And what were your inspirations to develop the dark vibe of the film? What challenges did the film imposed?
Erik Bloomquist - Gravamos este filme em apenas sete noites malucas! Éramos, literalmente, vampiros. O incrível elenco e restante equipa estiveram totalmente comprometidos com a experiência, tornando muitas das restrições e desafios parte do que torna o filme tão especial.
We shot this film in only seven crazy overnights! We were, quite literally, vampires. The amazing cast and crew totally committed to the experience, making many of our restrictions and challenges part of what makes the movie so special.
PC – Como descreve sua relação com o género do terror?/ How do you describe your relationship with the horror genre?
Erik Bloomquist - Sou um grande fã de filmes terror e adoro praticamente todos os subgéneros. Já vi uma tonelada de filmes e séries e acredito firmemente que as melhores histórias surgem por causa da maneira como são contadas - não apenas o que é o logline.
I’m a huge horror fan and love virtually all subgenres. I watch a ton of movies and TV and am a firm believer that the best stories emerge because of the way they’re told -- not just what the logline is.
PC – É uma pergunta difícil tendo em conta os tempos imprevisíveis em que vivemos, mas tem algum plano para o que fará a seguir?/ It’s a hard question taking into consideration the unpredictable times we’re living in, but do you have any plans for what you’ll do next?
Erik Bloomquist - Temos três filmes em pós-produção que filmamos (com segurança!) durante a pandemia e todos serão lançados ainda este ano, inclusive. "Weekenders" (uma comédia romântica de Duplassian), "Night at the Eagle Inn" (um filme de terror / mistério paranormal mais mainstream) e "Christmas on the Carousel" (um filme de família / romance que está chegando à maioridade). Estamos entusiasmados com todos eles e mal podemos esperar para voltar à produção de mais este ano!
We actually have three movies in post-production that we shot (safely!) during the pandemic and will all be coming out later this year including. Weekenders (a romantic Duplassian) dramedy, Night at the Eagle Inn (a more mainstream paranormal horror/mystery movie), and Christmas on the Carousel (a coming-of-age family/romance). We’re excited about all of them and can’t wait to get back into production on more this year!
