Em Portugal para apresentar no MOTELx o seu mais recente filme, "Anna and the Apocalypse", John McPhail tirou uns minutos do seu tempo para conversar com o Portal Cinema. O resultado é a divertida entrevista que se segue a um cineasta jovem com grande potencial e extremamente humilde, simpático e talentoso que poderá ir muito longe num futuro próximo!
In Portugal to present at MOTELx its latest film, "Anna and the Apocalypse", John McPhail took a few minutes of his time to talk with Portal Cinema. The result is the funny interview that follows. McPhail is a young filmmaker with great potential and an extremely humble, friendly and talented person who could go very far in the near future!
Portal Cinema (PC) – First of all, tell us about your background. When and Why did you decided to embark on a career in the film industry? / Pode-nos contar um pouco sobre o seu histórico profissional? Quando e porque é que decidiu embarcar numa carreira na indústria cinematográfica?
John McPhail (JMP) - I started out by studying film and TV at college and then was lucky enough to be accepted to do my BA Honours at the RCS where I specialised in Cinematography, I wanted to be a director of photography as I love colour and frames. During university and for a few years afterwards I'd write and shoot comedy sketches with friends. I've always loved creating content and been in love with films it's an industry I've always wanted to work in.
Comecei por estudar Cinema e TV na Faculdade e depois tive a sorte de ter sido aceite para fazer o Mestrado na RCS, onde me especializei em Cinematografia, isto porque queria ser Diretor de Fotografia! Durante a Universidade e, posteriormente, durante mais alguns anos escrevi e fiz vários sketches de comédia com amigos. Sempre adorei criar conteúdo e apaixonei-me por filmes. É uma indústria em que sempre quis trabalhar.
PC – In the beginning of your career you work as a Assistant/Camera Operator in several productions, including the TV Series “Waterloo Road” and the British Film “Up There”. What were those experiences like, and how did they help your career? / No início da sua carreira trabalhou como assistente / operador de câmara em várias produções, incluindo a série de TV “Waterloo Road” e o filme britânico “Up There”. Como foram essas experiências e como ajudaram a sua carreira?
JMP - These where massive learning opportunities for me to see how different sets are run, what indie film is all about and what each department does. I watched and learned loads from lots of directors and crew members; something's I liked, other things I didn't. I watched how to block a scene, how to talk to actors and crew. I learned how to cope under pressure as there are a million and one things to be done on a set and you can only do one thing at a time – it showed me how to prioritise and make sure everything is done to the best of my ability.
Foram oportunidades massivas de aprendizagem e serviram para ver como diferentes cenários são executados. O que é um filme indie e o que cada departamento faz. Eu vi e aprendi bastante com um monte de diretores e membros da equipa técnica. Houve coisas de que gostei, outras coisas que não gostei. Aprendi a lidar com pressão, a falar com atores e equipa, e até a parar adequadamente uma cena. No fundo aprendi a lidar com todo o processo, pois há um milhão de coisas a acontecerem ao mesmo tempo num set e tu só podes fazer uma coisa de cada vez. Tal experiência mostrou-me como priorizar e garantir que tudo seja feito com o melhor da minha capacidade.
PC – Your first film as a director was “Notes”, a short romantic comedy that was highly acclaimed during its festival run! What led you to take a chance on a directing job, and what did “Notes” mean to your career? / O seu primeiro filme como realizador foi “Notes”, uma curta comédia romântica que foi muito aclamada durante o circuito de festivais! Como acabou por realizar este projeto e o que significou para si?
JMP - At that time, I had started to dislike my job in the camera department. I was approaching 30 and I wasn't being creatively challenged. The comedy sketches I'd been working on where all just set up and punchline, there wasn't any character or heart to them. I am a big fan of character and heart and that's the type of project I really wanted to do. While I was working on a TV show called Waterloo Road, I was living in a flat with a guy I'd never met, he worked night shift and I was doing 13-hour days. I used to leave him post-it notes saying things like, “Hi, I’m John your flat mate. There is beer in the fridge - have one if you want,” and he started to write me back. I'm a bit of a romantic at heart and thought this would be sweet if it was a guy and a girl starting a relationship. That is what inspired me to do Notes.
Naquela época comecei a não gostar do meu trabalho no departamento de câmaras. Estava a chegar aos 30 e não estava a ser desafiado de um forma criativa. Os sketches de comédia em que estava a trabalhar eram estanques, não havia neles nenhuma personagem com coração. Sou um grande fã de personagem com coração e esse é o tipo de projeto que eu realmente queria fazer. Enquanto estava a trabalhar num programa de TV chamado "Waterloo Road" estava a morar um apartamento com um rapar que eu nunca conheci, já que ele trabalhava num turno da noite e raramente estávamos ao mesmo tempo em casa. O que é certo é que costumava deixar post-its dizendo coisas como: "Olá, sou John, o seu colega de apartamento. Tem cerveja na frigorífico e pode tirar uma se quiser”, e ele começou a escrever post-its de volta. Eu sou algo romântico e pensei que isso seria uma boa base para uma história sobre dois jovens que estavam a começar um relacionamento. Isso é o que me inspirou a escrever esse filme.
PC – What followed was a series of other shorts and then, in 2015, you directed your first feature film, the comedy “Where Do We Go From Here”. What can you tell us about this project and what made you decided to jump into the feature film world? / O que se seguiu foi uma série de outras curtas e, em 2015, realizou a sua primeira longa-metragem, a comédia “Where Do We Go From Here”. O que nos pode dizer sobre este projeto e o que o fez decidir entrar no mundo das longas-metragens?
JMP - I'd always wanted to make the leap to features after I made “Notes” and saw success start to happen with it. I decided I'd make three short films all in the comedy genre but trying out different stories and each time making them bigger and better. I'd use these shorts as calling cards to help raise the finance for that first feature film. “Where Do We Go From Here?” is a coming of age romantic comedy about a 25 year old who lives and works in a care home, it a really sweet and endearing film full of heart and big characters all the ingredients to all the elements I had enjoyed and had been successful in my short films.
Sempre quis dar o salto para as longas, particularmente após o sucesso de “Notes”. Mas antes de dar esse salto decidi fazer três curtas-metragens no género da comédia para assim ir experimentando histórias diferentes e cada vez tornando-as maiores e melhores. A ideia era usar essas curtas como cartões de visita para ajudar a financiar a minha primeira longa-metragem. "Where do We go From Here?" é uma comédia romântica de amadurecimento sobre um jovem de 25 anos que vive e trabalha numa casa de cuidados continuados. É um filme realmente doce e amável cheio de coração e grandes personagens, ou seja, todos os ingredientes para todos os elementos dos quais eu gostei e com os quais tive sucesso nas minhas curtas-metragens.
PC – Having directed both shorts and feature films, what kind of project do you enjoy doing the most? In your opinion what are the negative and positive points of both of them? / Tendo realizado tanto curtas quanto longas, que tipo de projeto mais gosta de fazer? Na sua opinião, quais são os pontos negativos e positivos de ambos?
JMP - Shorts are amazing and every filmmaker should use them as learning tools to find out what kind of stories they like to tell and how to tell them. This is where you get to be creative and it's hard to tell a story in a short period of time. There is no money in them though, and as an unknown director it's hard to get finance for shorts so you need to spend your own money to make them and making that back is impossible. It has to be an investment in your career, or that's how I looked at them.
I love making features! It's been my dream to work on films and I just love seeing them up on the silver screen and hearing audiences’ reactions to them. I like to make people laugh, even in day-to-day life I love seeing people laugh and smile, so to make a cinema room full of people laugh and enjoy themselves is a buzz I can't describe.
As curtas são incríveis e todo o cineasta deve usá-las como ferramentas de aprendizagem para descobrir que tipo de histórias gostam de contar e como as contar. É aí que um cineasta começa a ser criativo e é difícil contar uma história num curto período de tempo. Não é preciso muito dinheiro para as fazer, mas também não fazem muito dinheiro. Para um realizador desconhecido é difícil obter financiamento para curtas e é preciso investir capital próprio que, já se sabe, dificilmente terá retorno. Mas tal investimento tem que ser um investimento na sua carreira, pelo menos é assim que olho para as curtas.
Eu adoro longas metragens! O meu sonho é trabalhar em filmes e, confesso, adoro vê-los no cinema e ouvir as reacções do público. Gosto de fazer as pessoas rirem, mesmo no dia-a-dia. Adoro ver as pessoas rir e sorrir, então fazer uma sala de cinema rir, especialmente com um filme meu, é uma grande sensação que eu não consigo descrever.
PC – Your second feature film was “Anna and the Apocalypse”. It’s a very peculiar film that mixes Christmas, Zombies, Music, Comedy and a bit of Gore. How did this film come to be? And what can you tell us of this project! / O seu segundo filme chama-se “Anna and the Apocalypse”. É um filme muito peculiar que mistura Natal, Zombies, Música, Comédia e um pouco de Gore. Como é que este filme surgiu? E o que nos pode dizer sobre esse projeto?
JMP - It started off as a short called “Zombie Musical” written and directed by Ryan McHenry. Unfortunately Ryan passed away from cancer in 2015. His long-term friend and Producer, Naysun Alae-Carew, carried on the project and saw “Where Do We Go From Here?” at the Glasgow Film Festival and I was invited to pitch for the movie. The feature script was co- written by Ryan and Alan McDonald and the music was written by Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly. Like i mentioned earlier I'm a massive fan of character and heart and it was the biggest thing that stood out for me with the Anna and the Apocalypse script.
Tudo começou com um curta chamada “Zombie Musical” escrita e realizada por Ryan McHenry. Infelizmente, o Ryan faleceu de cancro em 2015. O seu amigo e produtor de longa data, Naysun Alae-Carew, continuou o projeto e viu o “Where Do We Go From Here?” no Festival de Cinema de Glasgow e , por isso, fui convidado para ajudar a fazer o filme. O argumento foi co-escrito por Ryan e Alan McDonald e a música foi escrita por Roddy Hart e Tommy Reilly. Como mencionei anteriormente, sou um grande fã de personagens com coração e foi isso a maior coisa que se destacou para mim no argumento de "Anna and the Apocalypse", já que há muito coração e grandes personagens no filme.
PC – What do you expect the audience to feel when they see this film? What can you say to convince them to see it? And what kind of reaction do you think a normal spectator will have when they will see it? Are you curious to know how the Portuguese audience will react to it? /
O que espera que o público sinta quando vir esse filme? O que pode dizer para convencê-los a vê-lo? E que tipo de reacção acha que um espectador terá quando o vir? Está curioso para saber como o público português vai reagir a isso?
JMP - This is a fun film made by film fans who just want to entertain you. The film is highly entertaining, it's funny, it's sweet, it's sad, it's gory and has so much heart to it. The songs are all different and you will leave singing one or two of them for days afterwards. It seems to bring those people who love musicals and those who don't together, and the same with people who love horror and those who don't. It is one of the most unique genre mashups you’ll ever see and my dream is for it to be this generations Gremlins.
I'm so excited to find out what a Portuguese audience makes of it. I love sitting in with audiences I feel like it's part of my education as a young director finding out what audiences like and dislike. There is no better way learn that to sit in with them and hopefully people will enjoy it and want to come chat about the film afterwards.
Este é um filme divertido feito por fãs de cinema que só querem entretê-lo. O filme é muito divertido, é engraçado, é doce, é triste, é sangrento e tem muito coração. As músicas são todas diferentes e vão passar a cantar uma ou duas delas durante vários dias. É um filme que parece chamar as pessoas que gostam musicais e aqueles que não gostam, e até mesmo as pessoas que amam o terror e aqueles que não gostam. É um dos mashups de género mais exclusivos que já viu em algum lado e, no fundo, o meu sonho é que se torne no Gremlins desta geração.
Estou muito animado para descobrir como é que uma audiência portuguesa vai reagir. Eu adoro sentar-me com o público, acho que faz parte da minha educação como jovem cineasta descobrir o que o público gosta e não gosta. Não há melhor maneira de aprender do que sentar com o público e espero que as pessoas gostem e queiram conversar sobre o filme depois.
PC – Is it correct to say that you have a preference for the comedy genre? If so, why that preference? / É correto dizer que tem uma preferência pelo género de comédia? Se sim, porque essa preferência?
JMP - I love to see people laugh and smile, and I believe comedy can also touch so many people. I'm a big believer in the idea that if you can make people laugh, you can make them cry, and if you make them cry you can REALLY make them laugh.
Adoro ver as pessoas rirem e a sorrirem, e acredito que a comédia também pode tocar as pessoas. Acredito piamente na ideeia de que, se você consegue fazer as pessoas rirem, pode fazê-las chorar e, se você as fizer chorar, poderá fazê-las rir.
PC – You’ done both films and tv series. Do you prefer working on a film or on a tv series? / Trabalhou tanto em cinema como em televisão, mas o que prefere facer?
JMP - I LOVE film! I try to watch a film a day. It's a dream to be part of cinema and telling stories on the silver screen. There is some amazing things happening in TV right now and there are certain shows I watch but I really just want to make movies.
Eu amo o cinema! Tento ver um filme por dia. É um sonho fazer parte do cinema e contar histórias na tela de cinema. Há algumas coisas incríveis a acontecerem na TV agora e há certos shows que vejo, mas eu realmente só quero fazer filmes.
PC – What are your major influences in the movie/television industries? / Quais são as suas principais influências nas indústrias do cinema / televisão?
JMP - I grew up watching loads of John Carpenter films, I love all his films. I love how he can work in so many genres and you can still tell it's a John Carpenter film. I love John Hughes movies, how he brings so much heart and fun to his characters and stories. I adore Trey Parker and Matt Stone, I think they are comedy geniuses. I also love Stephen Spielberg, Sam Rami, Kim Jee-woon, Park Chan-woo, Takshi Miikie. My favorite film of all time is “Ghostbusters!” I think it's the perfect movie.
Cresci a ver muitos filmes de John Carpenter, e adoro todos os seus filmes. Aprecio imenso a forma como ele trabalha em tantos géneros e tu ainda consegues dizer, ao ver qualquer um, que é um filme de John Carpenter. Também adoro os filmes de John Hughes, e como ele traz tanto coração e diversão às histórias. E, claro, sou um fã Trey Parker e Matt Stone! Acho que são génios da comédia. Também aprecio os trabalhos de Stephen Spielberg, Sam Rami, Kim Jee-woon, Park Chan-woo e Takshi Miikie. O meu filme favorito de todos os tempos é “Ghostbusters!”. Acho-o um filme perfeito!
PC – What are your hopes, ambitions and objectives for your professional career? Quais são as suas esperanças, ambições e objetivos para a sua carreira?
JMP - I really admire John Carpenter - someone who can work in many types of genres and have films that can connect with so many people from all over the world. I also just want to be myself, entertain and tell stories to people. I am in such a lucky position and this is so many people's dream that I want to make sure I am humble about it and always remember my audience.
Eu admiro John Carpenter, alguém que pode trabalhar em muitos tipos de géneros e ter filmes que podem se relacionar com tantas pessoas de todo o mundo. Também só quero ser eu mesmo, entreter e contar histórias para as pessoas. Estou numa posição de privilegiada e sei que esse é o sonho de tantas pessoas. È por isso que quero ter certeza de que sou humilde sobre esta profissão e que sempre me lembro do meu público.
PC - Lastly, tell us what can we expect from you in the future? What are your next projects and what can you tell us about them? Por último, diga-nos o que podemos esperar de si no futuro? O que nos pode adiantar sobre os seus próximos projetos?
JMP - The team and I have a few projects in development at the moment and I'm reading lots of scripts.. The world of film has just opened its doors to me and I'm so excited and cannot wait to see what happens next. I’ll keep you posted.
A minha equipa e eu temos alguns projetos em desenvolvimento e, por estes dias, ando a ler muitos argumentos. O mundo do cinema acaba de abrir suas portas para mim e estou bastante animado. Mal posso esperar para ver o que acontece a seguir.
