Before we discuss your role on “Carga”, I would love to know how did you decided to embark on an acting career?

Michalina Olszanska (MO) .

Well, first of all my parents are both actors so I think it was always there. They actually didn't want me to be an actress, especially my mom but when you are growing up in a theatre family, you watch films, you meet your parents' friends and it all comes naturally. My mom wanted me to be a doctor but let's be honest. I played the violin for 12 years there was no way for me to get a "normal" job!

PC - Como descreve o início da sua carreira e quais foram os maiores desafios?/ How do you describe the beginning of your career, and what were your major challenges that you faced at the time?

When I finished  high school, which was a very special school for "extra talented instrumentalists" it was more than obvious that I should continue the career as a violinist. So when I decided to try something totally new it was very risky. At the time I had no experience in the theatre or cinema. But somehow it felt right. I decided to try. It's never easy when you give up on something you are already good at and enter the unknown path but sometimes it's a good choice after all. If it didn't work at least I would have got the experience. Fortunatelly it did work. I'm happy I was brave enough back then.

Is it right to say that your first major contact with the Mainstream Movie Industry was with the film “Jack Strong”? What can you tell us about that experience and what did it represent to your career?

That;s right :) I was so excited when I got this small role. It didn't mean that I was already in the buisness and for sure I didn't see all these amazing future  film adventures coming but at least someone noticed me and it was the most important thing at the time. That was the first time I thought that maybe trying acting wasn't a bad idea and maybe I can do something in this industry.

/Today you are considered one of the most promising Polish Actresses and you’ve participated in several well successful shorts and feature films in Poland, but I believe the International Audience connects your name with your great performance in the drama “Já, Olga Hepnarová”. How did you get involved in that project and what can you tell us about the all experience? And do you agreed with the assessment that it was the role that put you on the World’s Radar?

Arte e amor odeiam falsidade. Essa é minha opinião.

I don't know about the world's radar but for sure this role brought me some other roles. The story how I got this one isn't very exciting ;) I was asked to participate in the casting like many other girls. They were looking in Poland because it was a Chech-Polish coproduction and they wanted an actress unknown in Czech Republic. When I met the directors we felt the connection very soon. It turned out that we have the same idea for how Olga should look and behave. It may sound cheesy but I actually believe that there's no such thing as competition in acting because roles literally wait for the actors. There are so many of us around the world and there's no point in casting someone who's not the one for the part. It's not even about the talent after all. Sure good actors will play many roles but I strongly believe in energy. And sometimes actors with less experience or not so flexible are being chosen because they have this undescribable something, which makes them perfect and one and only for the role. We can see in many Hollywood films how it turns out when a person is casted only because they are famous and can bring money. It feels fake. I believe Olga was waiting for me and I can assure you that there are sooo many roles that I know I will never get no matter how hard I try. And even if I do, it's gonna be a big mistake. Art and love hate falsehood. That's my oppinion.

PC - Destacou-se em papeis dramáticos e histórico. Mas prefere trabalhar em algum género específico? Que tipo de filmes ou personagens é que a atraem?/ You’ve stand out with your roles in many drama period films, namely War Period Films. Do you prefer to work on a specific movie genre? And to what type of characters/ movies are you draw into?

A nossa tribo.

I like psychological dramas but, who doesn't? It can be fun to watch oneself in a big budget super hero movie but I'm not sure if it is so fun to shoot. I did play in such a big budget film and it was ok but I missed the most important thing: this specific aura and connection between people. When I choose the role I firstly think about people I'm going to do it with. Are we going to end up as friends or just the co-workers that hardly like each other. It may sound idealistic but I was lucky so far. For example Bruno Gascon found me and not only as an actress but as a person. We are friends now and I treasure it the most. No award, no spotlight can compare to that. So, to answer your question - for me it's people before the script. Because if I feel a connection with someone it's almost sure it's gonna be a good job. And even if not everybody will like the results "our people" will. Our tribe.

 Moving on to “Carga”. How did you get involved in this project? What did seduced you about this project that is slightly different from anything you’ve done in your movie career so far? And what type of preparation did you had for this role considering the sex traffic theme of the film?

As I mentioned before Bruno found me. Joana Domingues texted me and it somehow felt right from the begining. And when I read the script I was 100% sure. I think we all share the same film taste so I knew that working on this project was going to be a great adventure.  About the preparation, I'm a "director's actor". That's also why it's so important for me to feel the connection because once I agree to work with someone, I trust them. I can have some suggestions, we can argue but I need to be sure that the person I work with knows exactly what they want. Bruno knew. So I was preparing by listeningto  him. He's stories. He shared with me his resarch on the topic but most of all we focused on the characters. Their backstory. It's hard to explain but it was more like psychological work. And Bruno is the best at that. Literally I think it's safe to say that I never met a director so good at working with actors. So devoted. Not only me but all of us. In my opinion there's not a sinlge "false note" in Carga. Every single actor was for 100% in it, what you can see in the movie are real, deep emotions and it's thanks to Bruno. You can be a great actor but if the director is not able to lead you and you don't feel safe, it will be just a medium sensation. Bruno knows how to push actors, how to get all the emotions from them but at the same time he protects them.

Tells us a bit about your character. Can you give us a personal profile of her?

I play two characters in Carga. One of them is Victoryia, a girl for Eastern Europe, a victim of human trafficing. The other one is Alanna, a woman who runs the "buisness" with her brother. So it's a classical victim/villain combination. It wasn't easy. I mean it was an unbelievable acting challange but also from the psychological point of view. We wanted to mark the fact that who we are and where we are is just a coincidence. It's up to the choices we make and the choices people make for us. And that we all have pottencial to be hurt and to hurt others. When I had to put mysefl in a possition of both of the opposite characters it made me think a lot. It literally twisted everything I knew about myself. Nowadays we as a society are very eager to judge. To point who's bad and who's good and what is right and what is wrong. I really like the film, I think it's strong and can make a difference but my personal achievement is... well. Personal. This whole experience helped me look at people and myself differently. It's a little bit scarry but it's so important to remember that being a good person is a everyday choice and this choice is not as obvious as we would like it to be. Of course we all know that but knowing and feeling - it's a different story. We like to assure ourseves that we would never ever do something. But we would never ever do something in a situation we are now. The truth is we don't know what we would do if even a small detail in our life changed.

PC - Como foi filmar em Portugal? Enfrentou algum desafio em particular? / How was it like to film in Portugal? Did you had to face any particular challenges during the filming process?

It was great. Like really. Maybe I was just lucky but I think that Portuguese people are so open minded and helpful. That's my experience so it's all I can say. Joana and Bruno gathered the best people, as much in a professional way, as personal. And of course Portugal is insanely beautiful. Every person I talk to about Portugal is like - oh, it's so magical! Well, it is :)

In your opinion what can the audience expect from the film? If the film reaches the Polish Movie Theaters, do you believe “Carga” will cause some impact on the box office?

I think I kind of answered this question before. Carga is a very strong film, maybe even brutal sometimes but it's not to shock the audience. It's to help us - I say us because now I'm the audience too- feel a small percent of what people like Victoria feel. I think it's not one of those films we can watch as cold blooded observers. The story takes you in, makes you a part of this world. About Polish theatres it's always hard to tell. I don't even want to start on that topic ;)

E na sua opinião em que tipos de filmes devem os criadores polacos apostar?/ I don’t want to end this interview without making a more abstract question, but one that I feel is important considering your professional and personal experience within the Polish Film Industry. How do you describe it’s current state? And in your opinion what king of genres and stories should Polish Storytellers focus on in the near future?

Something has changed in the Polish film industry in last years. We have a great history of films but then, in the 90' and  in the beining of the new century something happened. Maybe it;s because the best film makers travelled abroad and left us with domestic romantic commedies and bad soap operas ;) Now it's getting better and better, directors are becoming more brave and independent. I like abstract cinema so I wish we could do more that kind of stuff but I know it takes time.

Lastly can you tell us something about your future projects besides “Carga”? What’s next for your career and what are your main goals for the near future? Will we see yourself in Hollywood in a near future?

Now you can watch me in the Netfilx original series "1983". It's the first Netflix original production made in Poland. But I'm not working on anything right now. I needed to rest. I spent the last years on the film set and it was great but I didn't have time for myself. Now I have it and I am trying to figure out what to do with it. :D Propably I'll spend most of my time watching  movies... ;)
