Recentemente, o Portal Cinema teve o prazer de entrevistar a jovem atriz Freya Tingley, cujo mais recente trabalho, o thriller "The Sonata", passou pelo FantasPorto 2019 e pelo Lucca Film Festival, dois icónicos festivais de cinema apoiados pelo Portal Cinema.
Foi um prazer entrevistar e ficar a conhecer melhor esta promissora atriz que, certamente, dará muito que falar, pelos melhores motivos, nos próximos anos. A sua simpatia iguala-se ao seu claro talento, já demonstrado em filmes como o já mencionado "The Sonata", mas também em "Jersey Boys" ou "Sweller", e em séries populares como "Once Upon a Time" ou "Hemlock Grove". O Portal Cinema gostaria, portanto, de o convidar a descobrir um pouco mais sobre esta atriz na entrevista que se segue!
Recently, Portal Cinema had the great pleasure of interviewing the young actress Freya Tingley, whose most recent work, the thriller "The Sonata", was part of the selections of FantasPorto 2019 and the Lucca Film Festival, two iconic film festivals supported by Portal Cinema.
It was a pleasure to interview and get to know a little better this promising actress who has certainly a bright future ahead of her. Her sympathy equals her great acting talent that was already showcased in such films as "The Sonata", but also in "Jersey Boys" or "Sweller," and popular series such as "Once Upon a Time" or "Hemlock Grove. " Portal Cinema would therefore like to invite you to discover a little more about this actress in the interview that follows!
Portal Cinema (PC) – Para aqueles que não conhecem a sua carreira, pode-nos contar um pouco sobre o seu background? Quando e por que é que decidiu embarcar numa carreira de ator?/ For those who don’t know your career path, can you tell us a little bit about your background. When and Why did you decide to embark on an acting career?
Freya Tingley (FT) - I’d always been creatively inclined as a child. My parents took me to singing lessons; art lessons; percussion, saxophone and piano lessons; sewing lessons; a fashion design workshop; dance lessons...the list goes on and it exposed me to all the different forms of art. In spite of all that I actually really wanted to be a model but my parents kept telling me I wouldn’t be tall enough with them being short themselves. Nevertheless, I was determined I could will myself to be 6 foot tall and when I was 14 I went to a fair with my mum and there was a tent that a modeling agency had set up to ‘scout’ models. I pulled my mum into the tent, they took my photo and a couple of weeks later I got the call they wanted to take me on. From there they sent me to a commercial acting class and I loved it so much I wanted to start doing weekly classes. It was a few weeks later in my first acting class that I instantly decided I was going to be an actress - and the rest is history.
Desde cedo que tive um lado criativo. Os meus pais levaram-me a aulas de canto; aulas de arte; aulas de percussão, saxofone e piano; aulas de costura; uma oficina de design de moda; aulas de dança ... a lista continua e , por isso, fui exposta desde cedo a todas as diferentes formas de arte. O que realmente queria era ser modelo, mas os meus pais sempre me disseram que eu nunca seria alta o suficiente, já que eles próprios são de estatura baixa. Mas eu estava determinado a seguir o meu sonho e, quando tinha 14 anos, fui a uma feira com minha mãe e havia lá uma tenda que uma agência montou para encontrar modelos. Como é lógico puxei a minha mãe para dentro da tenda e lá tiraram-me várias fotos para um book, tendo umas semanas mais tarde sido contratada pela agência. A primeira coisa que fizeram foi mandarem-me para uma aula de representação comercial e gostei tanto que comecei a ter aulas semanais de representação. Várias semanas depois, na minha primeira aula de teatro, decidi instantaneamente que queria ser uma atriz e o resto é história.
PC – No início de sua carreira, participou em várias curtas-metragens, um tipo de filme que muitos subestimam. Este género ajudou-a a crescer como atriz? E esses trabalhos influenciaram a sua carreira?/ At the beginning of your career, you participated in several short films, a type of film that many undervalue. Did it help you grow as an actress? And did those jobs influenced your career?
FT - The beauty of a short film is that when you’re starting out it gives you a nice gradient to working up to starring in bigger productions. It also helps you start building a resume and a reel. And with every job I do, with every character I play, I always feel like I’m growing and expanding as an actress.
A grande vantagem de um curta-metragem é que, quando estamos a começar na profissão, temos nestas curtas um bom gradiente para trabalhar até conseguirmos protagonizar produções mais ambiciosas. Também ajudam a criar um currículo sólido e a dar-nos experiência. E digo isto porque, com cada trabalho que faço, com cada personagem que interpreto, sinto que estou a crescer como atriz.

PC – O seu primeiro papel num longa-metragem foi em "X". Como foi essa primeira experiência de numa longa metragem?/ Your first role on a feature film was on “X”. What was that first feature experience like?
FT - When I first read the character breakdown I was drawn to the role. She was edgy and I saw her as a challenge as she was a drug addict and a far cry from anything like me. I auditioned twice before I was cast and once I was cast I had one rehearsal with the director and Hanna Mangan Lawrence and a week later I was on set. We shot in Kings Cross in Sydney which is a very seedy area - especially at night - and the street wasn’t blocked off for filming so for one of the scenes the camera was across the street capturing my character walk into a McDonald’s to order food. All the people around were real and so it really created an authentic space for the character.
Quando li pela primeira vez a descrição da personagem, fiquei atraída para o papel. Era uma personagem "edgy" e via-a como um desafio, já que era uma mulher viciada em drogas e muito longe de qualquer coisa parecida comigo. Fiz o teste duas vezes antes de ser contratada e, quando fui contratada, fiz um ensaio com o realizador e com a Hanna Mangan Lawrence. Uma semana depois estava no set de filmagens. Nós filmamos em Kings Cross em Sydney, que é uma área muito decadente - especialmente à noite - e a rua não foi bloqueada para as filmagens, então para uma das cenas a câmaras estava do outro lado da rua capturando a minha personagem andando por um McDonald's para pedir comida . Todas as pessoas ao redor eram reais e por isso realmente criaram um espaço autêntico para a personagem.
PC – A percepção é que a sua primeira grande chance em Hollywood foi com os papéis em duas grandes séries de sucesso: "Once Upon a Time" e "Hemlock Grove". Concorda com esta avaliação? O que nos pode dizer sobre a sua experiência nestes projetos?/ The perception is that your first major break in Hollywood/ Acting World was with the recurring roles on two major hit tv shows: “Once Upon a Time” and “Hemlock Grove”. Do you agree with this assessment? What can you tell us about your experience filming these shows and how did it help your career?
FT - Absolutely. “Hemlock Grove” was my first series regular part and was immensely exciting for me. It had a huge budget and with that comes amazing sets, costumes and catering...! After "Hemlock Grove", I started to get offers coming in which was really exciting. “Once upon a Time“ comes with a huge fan base and I immediately felt their support - they’re a very supportive and lovely fan base.
Absolutamente. "Hemlock Grove" foi a minha primeira participação regular numa série e foi uma experiência imensamente emocionante para mim. A séria tinha um orçamento enorme e com isso chegaram cenários surpreendentes, magníficos guarda roupas e até catering! Depois de "Hemlock Grove" comecei, realmente, a receber ofertas emocionantes. Uma delas foi "Once upon a Time", uma série com uma enorme base de fãs e, de imediato, senti o seu apoio. Eles são uma base de fãs muito prestável e adorável.
PC – O que se seguiu foi uma participação popular em dois filmes que tiveram uma distribuição mundial importante: “Jersey Boys” e “Swelter“. Qual foi o significado destes dois filmes para a sua carreira?/ What followed were some popular participation in two films that got some major worldwide distribution: “Jersey Boys” and “Swelter“. What was the significance of these two films for your career?
FT - When I got the audition for “Jersey Boys” I was so excited to see Clint Eastwood’s name attached. I’m a big fan of movies from the 70s and the prospect of working with an auteur from that era encouraged me to work extra hard to get the part. Working with Clint was an experience I’ll never forget; he’s fast working, knows what he wants and how to get it, and doesn’t waste time. He even sat with me at lunchtime and I felt honored that he picked me. Swelter was a fun experience working with a lot of actors who have been in the industry a long time.
Quando fiz o teste para "Jersey Boys" fiquei empolgada quando vi o nome de Clint Eastwood associado ao filme. Sou uma grande fã de filmes dos Anos 70 e a perspectiva de trabalhar com um autor daquela época incentivou-me a trabalhar ainda mais arduamente para conseguir o papel. Trabalhar com o Clint foi uma experiência que nunca vou esquecer. Ele trabalha rápido, sabe o que quer e como o conseguir, e não perde tempo com insignificâncias. Um dos melhores momentos foi quando ele se sentou comigo numa hora do almoço e senti-se honrrada por ele ter-me escolhido. Já "Swelter" foi uma experiência divertida, tendo trabalhado com muitos atores que estão na indústria há muito tempo.

PC – O seu mais recente projeto foi o thriller de terror “The Sonata”. Como é que se envolveu neste projeto?/ Your latest acting project is the horror thriller “The Sonata”. How did you get involved in this project?
FT - I got an email from my agent who sent me the script and arranged a Skype meeting with Andrew. Andrew and I then talked about the script and the character at length. I was drawn to the script because the character was so specific and unique and that excited me to want to dive into her shoes. Sometimes the characters in a script are distinct but the stories are weak. This had an intriguing and thoughtful story as well.
Recebi um email do meu agente que me enviou o argumento e agendei uma reunião do Skype com Andrew, onde conversamos muito sobre o argumento e a personagem. Fui atraído pelo argumento, porque a personagem era tão específica e única, algo que me empolgou e me levou a querer mergulhar na sua vida. Às vezes os personagens num argumento são distintos, mas as histórias são fracas. Mas em "The Sonata", para além de uma grande personagem, existe também uma história intrigante e pensativa.
PC – Como descreve a sua personagem e quais foram os principais desafios de filmar este projeto?/ How do you describe your character, and what were the main challenges of filming this picture?
FT - Rose is a professional violinist who is fiercely independent sometimes to her own detriment. She’s very serious and that comes from losses in her past but she’s strong nonetheless. Three months prior to shooting I had to learn the violin in preparation for the movie. As anyone who plays violin knows, it’s one of the hardest instruments to learn especially later on in life and requires very precise and grueling technical skill and coordination - that was the most challenging aspect of the role.
A Rose é uma violinista profissional que é ferozmente independente, mas às vezes em seu próprio detrimento. Ela é muito séria e isso deriva de perdas no seu passado, mas ela é forte mesmo assim. Um desafio foi o violino. Isto porque três meses antes de começar as gravações tive que aprender a tocar violino. Como qualquer pessoa que toca violino sabe, este é um dos instrumentos mais difíceis de aprender, especialmente mais tarde na vida, e requer habilidade e coordenação técnica precisas e extenuantes. Sem dúvida que este foi o aspecto mais desafiador do papel.
PC – Olhando para a sua carreira é difícil não ver que fez muitos filmes de terror. É o seu género favorito? Na sua opinião, quais são os desafios deste género em particular?/ Looking at your career, it’s hard not to notice that you’ve done a lot of horror projects. Is it your favourite genre? In your opinion, what are the challenges of this particular genre?
FT - It is not on purpose but I love the horror genre. When I was younger my mum would take me to the video store on the Weekends and holidays and a lot of what I picked was horror. I loved it and still do. As an actress, the challenge of the genre is creating the emotion of fear or terror without the actual stimulus of what’s in the scene.
Não é de propósito, mas realmente adoro o terror. Quando era mais nova,a minha mãe levava-me ao videoclube local nos fins de semana e feriados e, verdade seja dita, muito do que escolhia estava relacionado com o terror. Como atriz, o desafio do género é criar a emoção do medo ou terror sem o estímulo real do que está a acontecer na cena.
PC – É a pergunta clássica para qualquer ator que fez tanto TV como Cinema, mas tenho que lhe perguntar: prefere trabalhar numa série de televisão ou num filme? / It’s the classic question for any actor that have done both TV and Film, but I need to ask you. What do you prefer: Work on TV Series or Work on a Film?
FT - Movies have more potential to have a style and voice that comes through visually as movies tend to have one director. TV shows tend to have a lot of directors on one season and therefore visually they have to be more formulaic. However, as an actress, I love working on both and there’s no difference. To me, work is work. I think the characters have gotten better and more interesting in TV, more so than a lot of movies and that is what I find fulfilling as an actress either way; three dimensional, real characters in a compelling story.
Os filmes têm mais potencial para ter um estilo e uma voz que aparecem visualmente, já que os filmes tendem a ter um só diretor. Os programas de TV tendem a ter muitos diretores em uma temporada e, portanto, visualmente eles têm que ser mais estereotipados. No entanto, como atriz, adoro trabalhar em ambos e não há diferença. Para mim, trabalho é trabalho. Acho que os personagens ficaram melhores e mais interessantes na TV, mais até do que muitos filmes, mas temos que fazer de tudo e é isso que eu acho que uma atriz tem que fazer, ou seja, tem sempre que estar preparada para assumir personagens tridimensionais e reais numa história convincente.
PC – Quais são as suas maiores influências no mundo do cinema e televisão? / What are your major influences in the acting and movie/television industries?
FT - My favorite actor of all time is Meryl Streep and I’m particularly inspired by her earlier performances like Sophie’s Choice, silkwood and Kramer vs. Kramer. Her ability to be people who are vastly different than her and at the same time bring a real-time thoughtfulness and intention to dialogue is unparalleled. I also love Daniel Day-Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Dustin Hoffman.
A minha atriz favorita de todos os tempos é Meryl Streep. Inspiro-me particularmente nas suas performances mais antigas, como "Sophie’s Choice", "Silkwood" e "Kramer vs. Kramer". A sua capacidade de assumir pessoas que são muito diferentes dela e, ao mesmo tempo, trazem uma atenção é impressionante. Também adoro Daniel Day-Lewis, Philip Seymour Hoffman e Dustin Hoffman.
PC - Quais são as suas esperanças, ambições e objetivos para a sua carreira? / And what are your hopes, ambitions and objectives for your professional career?
FT - I’d love the opportunity to play characters that feel real and unique at the same time, in stories that are brilliant and leave audiences compelled to rewatch them years to come.
Adoraria ter a oportunidade de interpretar personagens que parecem reais e únicos ao mesmo tempo e em histórias que são brilhantes e deixam o público compelido a assisti-los nos próximos anos.
PC - Por fim, mas não menos importante, o que podemos esperar da Freya Tingley no futuro? Quais são os seus próximos projetos e o que nos pode dizer sobre eles? / Lastly but not least what can we expect from Freya Tingley in the future? What are your next projects and what can you tell us about them?
FT - I shot a movie in October called "Year of the Detectives" and right now I’m recording a voice over for a show but I can’t reveal anything more about it yet!
Gravei um filme em Outubro chamado "Year of the Detectives" e agora estou a fazer a voice over para um show, mas eu não posso revelar mais nada sobre isso ainda!
