O Portal Cinema teve o prazer de entrevistar a cineasta britânica Beth Moran, cujo mais recente projeto, a curta "Missing a Note", é uma das curtas pré-candidatas ao Óscar de Melhor Curta-Metragem Live-Action. Esta obra conta com a presença da famosa Elaine Paige no elenco, mas é o valor global desta obra que se destaca, já que é, sem dúvida, um forte destaque do cinema britânico de 2019.
Portal Cinema (PC) – Gostaria de começar por lhe perguntar sobre a sua formação profissional e porque é que decidiu iniciar uma carreira profissional na indústria cinematográfica? Quais são as suas inspirações e influências nesta grande indústria? I would like to start by asking you about your professional background, and why did you decided to embark on a professional career in the film industry? What are your inspirations and influences in this major industry?
Beth Moran (BM) - O cinema é uma ferramenta tão poderosa e acho que o que mais me impressionou quando era mais jovem foi ver filmes com os meus amigos e familiares e sair do cinema sentindo-se realmente inspirada ou comovida por determinados filmes. É fascinante para mim pensar que assistir a um filme durante uma hora e meia pode ter um efeito tão profundo, e foi isso que me levou a querer seguir uma carreira na indústria cinematográfica.
Film is such a powerful tool and I think what struck me when I was younger was going to watch movies with my friends and family and coming out of the cinema feeling really inspired or moved by certain films. It was fascinating to me that watching a film for an hour and a half could have such a profound effect, and that's definitely what led me to want to pursue a career in the film industry.
PC - O que o levou a criar esta curta “Missing Note”? E qual foi seu plano inicial para o filme?/ What led you to create this short “Missing Note”? And what was your initial plan for the film?
BM - Trabalho nesta indústria, principalmente em documentários, há alguns anos e sabia que gostaria de fazer um filme algum dia. Quando me sentei para escrever “Missing a Note”, sabia que queria que isto tivesse algum significado, então baseei a história no meu avô, que agora mora com Demência. Não havia um plano como tal, eu só queria criar algo que eu pensasse que pudesse ressonar junto das pessoas.
I’d been working in the industry, mostly in documentary, for some years and knew I’d like to make a film of my own someday. When I sat down to write ‘Missing a Note' I knew I wanted it to have some meaning to it, so I based the story on my Grandpa who now lives with Dementia. There wasn’t a plan as such, I just wanted to create something I thought might resonate with people.
PC – O filme explora um poderoso tema: a demência. O que o levou a desenvolver este tema e o que espera alcançar ao destacar esta questão? E o que difere, na sua opinião, a abordagem de “Missing a Note” comparativamente com outros filmes que também desenvolvem esse problema!/ The film deals with a powerful theme of dementia. What led you to develop this powerful theme and what you hope to achieve by highlighting this issue? And what differs, in your opinion, the approach of “Missing Note” in comparison with other movies that also develop this issue!
BM - Acho que a demência é frequentemente retratada nos mídia sob uma luz muito sombria e, especialmente em filmes / programas de TV, estes parecem concentrar-se principalmente nos estágios posteriores e mais angustiantes da doença. Para mim, era importante destacar os primeiros sinais e iluminar a vida quotidiana com esta questão, em vez de apenas reforçar uma imagem de demência que as pessoas já conhecem.
Existem instituições de caridade e organizações que fazem um trabalho fantástico para apoiar os prestadores de cuidados e aumentar a compreensão da doença. Eu acho que realçar o trabalho deles é realmente importante e tivemos muita sorte em trabalhar com a instituição de caridade 'Dementia Matters', que era uma grande fonte de conhecimento e ajuda na criação do filme.
I think dementia is often portrayed in the media in a very bleak light and in films/tv programmes especially, they seem to mainly focus on the later, more distressing stages of the condition. It was important to me to highlight the early signs and to shine a light on the everyday living with it rather than just reinforcing an image of dementia people are already widely aware of.
There are so many charities and organisations doing a fantastic job to support carers and increase understanding of the disease. I think shining a light on their work is really important and we were very fortunate to work with the charity 'Dementia Matters' who were a great source of knowledge and help in making the film.
PC – Diga-nos o que espera que o público sinta ao assistir a este filme?/ Tell us what do you expect the audience to feel when watching this film?
BM - Espero que o público possa afastar-se do filme e refletir sobre como é precioso o tempo com os entes queridos - assim como espero que consigam aproveitar as performances e as músicas apresentadas no filme.
I hope audiences might come away from the film and reflect on how precious time is with loved ones - as well as hopefully enjoying the performances and the singing featured in the film.
PC - E como descreveria "Missing a Note" numa única frase?/ And how do you describe “Missing Note” in a single sentence?
BM - Uma representação sensível de demência com um twist musical.

How was to work with her and what do you believe she brought to this film? And what can you tell us about the revelation Darcy Jacobs?
BM - Durante anos, ouvi o programa de rádio da Elaine e obviamente acompanhei de perto a sua grande carreira no teatro musical, então, dado o elemento musical do filme, pensei que ela seria perfeita para o papel de Angie O'Connell. Felizmente, Elaine estava interessada em apoiar a mensagem e, quando ela concordou em fazer o filme, todos ficaram muito animados.
Darcy é uma jovem atriz muito talentosa que eu encontrei no YouTube, onde ela postou vídeos a cantar. A voz dela era tão incrível; Eu sabia que tinha que conhecê-la, pois o papel de Molly tinha uma grande parte de cantar. Ela acabara de interpretar Mercy Carney em 'The Ferryman' e já havia interpretado Young Cosette em 'Les Misérables' no West End. É muito profissional e uma pessoa excelente para trabalhar.
For years I’d listened to Elaine’s radio show and obviously knew of her great career in musical theatre, so given the musical element in the film, I thought she would be perfect for the role of Angie O’Connell. Luckily, Elaine was keen to support the message and when she agreed to do the film everyone was very excited.
Darcy is a very talented young actress who I first came across on YouTube where she had posted videos of herself singing. Her voice was so incredible; I knew I had to meet her as the role of Molly had a large singing part to it. She had just finished playing Mercy Carney in ‘The Ferryman’ and had previously played Young Cosette in ‘Les Misérables’ in the West End. She was very professional and excellent to work with.

Mum tópico completamente diferente, acabei de co-dirigir um documentário investigativo chamado "Everybody Flies" sobre o ar que todos respiramos em aviões. Ele estreou recentemente no Raindance Film Festival e, esperançosamente, continuará em outros festivais pelo mundo. "Missing a Note" também será exibido no Nottingham, Liverpool, Birmingham, Winchester e Foyle Film Festival em novembro de 2019, por isso é tudo muito emocionante.
On a completely different topic, I’ve just finished co-directing an investigative documentary film called ‘Everybody Flies’ about the air we all breathe on aeroplanes. It recently premiered at Raindance Film Festival and will hopefully go on to do other festivals around the world. 'Missing a Note' is also going to be shown at Nottingham, Liverpool, Birmingham, Winchester and Foyle Film Festival in November 2019 so it’s all very exciting.
