Quais são suas principais influências?/ First of all, tell us about your professional background and why did you decided to embark on a professional career in the film industry as a director and editor? What are your main directorial influences?

I’ve known I wanted to tell stories ever since I learned to read and write. Escaping into my imagination has always been second nature to me. Being the son of a writer and having a complicated childhood probably helped. But the idea of making movies came much later, probably because when I was younger, I thought that making movies was an activity reserved for English-speaking millionaires. Over time, I realized that I was wrong about the “English-speaking” bit.
I enrolled as a literature major before switching to translation and finally settling on film studies at the University of Buenos Aires. But less than a year later, I left university to film a web series with Daniela Iwaniuk, a friend that taught me most of what I know about filmmaking. It was around that time that I started working on both personal and not-so-personal projects as a sound engineer, editor, screenwriter, producer, and director. As far as my influences go, I love movies, but ultimately, I watch a lot of homemade videos on YouTube: people tripping, people throwing up, pandas getting scared by their own sneezes, and quinceañeras going up in flames. That’s the type of stuff that really inspires me the most.

The movie “Una chica invisible” that you’ll present at Fantasporto is your first feature film. In your opinion, what separates a feature from a short film and what challenges did you face to bring this film to life? How did you choose the cast and crew, and how was it to work with the film stars?

Making a short film and making a feature film is pretty similar, except that making a feature film gives you a lot more opportunities to screw it up. The biggest challenge when making Invisible Girl was sticking to the budget. We had a small team in which everyone had multiple roles. Luis Montoya, our art director, was literally our entire art department; we didn’t have prop makers or set designers. We only had one sound person and no assistant director. Vanesa Weimer, the producer, didn’t get more than three hours of sleep a night… in short, things that happen when making an independent film. But that didn’t make the experience any easier. By the time we finished filming, we had spent almost our entire budget and we still had to do the VFX, make an animation, compose and record an original score, and a few other things. We ended up taking out a loan that we’ll be working on paying off until the polar ice caps melt.
The casting process was different for each actor. I knew I wanted to cast Javier de Pietro (Daniel) and Andrea Carballo (Andrea) after seeing them in other productions. I knew that they were incredible actors and that they would be great in the movie. I’d already worked with Pablo Greco (Mauro) several times, so choosing him was easy. Lola Ahumada (Juana) came to audition. She brilliantly improvised a scene in which her mother was telling her she was going to give up her puppy. We were all left with our mouths hanging open. It was very easy to work with all the actors. They understood the project perfectly and brought an incredible amount of depth to their characters through rehearsal and improvisation.

How do you describe in your own words “Una chica invisible”?

In a nutshell, Invisible Girl is a black comedy in which a stalker installs hidden cameras in a woman’s apartment, and everything quickly goes to hell.

And what led you to create “Una chica insivible”? What was your initial plan for the film and how did the powerful themes of stalking and ciberbullying were developed with a comic vibe?

One day – I don’t know how – I just came up with this idea: A stalker whose sole intention is to masturbate installs hidden cameras in the apartment of a woman on the verge of suicide. The idea seemed perfect for a low-budget film because it only had two locations, two characters, and two screens. But everything changed as soon as I started writing. I added children, a theater, an action scene in the rain, an animation, and an orchestra. Why? Because that all sounds fun to me.

What are your hopes and ambitions for this film showcase at Fantasporto? What do you expect the Portuguese audience to feel when watching this film?

Fantasporto will be the first film festival to screen the film outside Argentina, and even though I try not to think too much about things I can’t control, I’m equally terrified and excited by the idea of a room full of Portuguese people watching Invisible Girl. All I want is for people to be entertained and leave the theater talking about what they just saw.

And what are you overall expectations for this film’s festival and theater run? How do you feel the Argentinian audience will react to this film and will it reach the Argentinian movie theaters?

Personally, I’m very excited about the idea of going to Portugal and having a great time at Fantasporto. I especially love fantasy and horror films. There are so many films programmed for the festival that I would love to see.
Invisible Girl is scheduled to be released in Argentina in April. Since it’s an independent film, it’ll obviously be difficult to get people to see it, but we’ll work tirelessly and run naked through the streets of Buenos Aires to bring people to the theater.

O que vem a seguir?/ This was your first venture in the directing of a feature film, but can we expect more in a near future? What’s next for your career?

Right now I’m looking for funding for my next feature film. It’ll have children, nuns, aliens, and countless pop culture references.
