Não se sabe ainda se a Pandemia permitirá a realização do FantasPorto 2021 na data programada, mas certo é que entre as longas metragens planeadas para este certame podemos encontrar vários filmes de relevo, como o filme de terror independente argentino "La Funeraria"/ "The Funeral Home". Entrevistamos o seu realizador, Mauro Iván Ojeda, sobre este curioso projeto que se enquadra perfeitamente no estilo deste famoso festival.
It's not yet known whether the Pandemic will allow FantasPorto 2021 to be held on the scheduled dates, but it's certain that among the feature films planned for this event we can find several major works, such as the independent Argentine horror film "La Funeraria"/ "The Funeral Home". We interviewed its director, Mauro Iván Ojeda, about this curious project that fits perfectly in the style of this famous festival.
PC - Gostaria por lhe começar por perguntar o porque de ter iniciado uma carreira no cinema?/ I would love to start by asking how did you decided to pursue a career in the film industry?
Mauro Iván Ojeda - Desde muito novo que me sinto atraído pelo mundo do cinema. Mesmo perto da minha casa abriu um videoclube, e desde muito jovem, comecei a trabalhar lá. Todas as tardes quando chegava da escola ficava horas e horas a ver filmes em VHS, desde "O Exorcista" ou toda a saga "Sexta-Feira 13", passando pelo "Amadeus" ou "Cinema Paradiso". Via de tudo. Terminei de ver os 5000 títulos das 3 filiais do videoclube em poucos anos. A partir desses momentos, acho que nasceu o meu desejo de fazer algo na indústria do cinema.
Since I was a child I was drawn to the world of cinema. In front of my house someone opened a videoclub, and from a very young age I started working there. Every afternoon when I got home from school, I spent hours and hours watching movies on VHS, from "The Exorcist" or the whole saga of "Friday the 13th", to classics like "Amadeus" or "Cinema Paradiso". I've watched everything. I finished seeing the 5000 titles of the 3 branches of the video club in a few years. From those moments I think my desire to do something in the film industry was born.
PC - Esta é a sua primeira longa metragem. O que nos pode dizer sobre a mesma e como chegou ao seu conceito?/ This is your first feature film. What can you tell us about it? How did you came up with the idea for it?
Mauro Iván Ojeda - O argumento surgiu há alguns anos. A premissa parecia muito poderosa: uma família que convive normalmente com a presença da casa funerária e, nesse contexto, cada membro da família enfrenta os seus próprios medos e infernos.
The script emerged a few years ago. The premise seemed very powerful to me: a family that lives in a naturalized way with the presence of the funeral home, and within that context, each member of the family faces their own fears and hells.
PC - O que o inspirtou para criar este filme?/ E que desafios enfrentou?/ What inspired you to create this film? And what challenges did it imposed?
Mauro Iván Ojeda - Existem vários filmes que me inspiraram quando me sentei para escrever este project, entre eles: "Poltergeist", "The Entity" e elementos de "The Conjuring". O desafio passou por criar um universo dentro dessa propriedade compartilhada com a casa funerária e envolver o espectador numa atmosfera turbulenta que vai crescendo até sufocar.
There are several films that inspired me when I sat down to write "The Funeral Home", among them are: "Poltergeist", "The Entity" and elements of "The Conjuring". The challenge was to create a universe within that property shared with the funeral home and envelop the viewer in a rushing atmosphere that gradually grows until it suffocates.
PC– Será que nos pode descrever o processo criativo por detrás deste projeto? E como espera que o espectador reaja?/ Can you describe your creative process behind it? And how do you expect the audiences will react to it?
Mauro Iván Ojeda - O processo criativo é quase sempre o mesmo. Há sempre a necessidade de escrever e imaginar uma história que tem algo a dizer, algo a contar e é uma proposta original. Espero que o espectador que termine de ver “The Funeral Home” fique mobilizado, incómodo, com sentimentos confusos, com algumas cenas e momentos que, espero, perdurem na retina e na memória.
The creative process is almost always the same. The constancy of writing and imagining a story that has something to say, something to tell and is an original proposal. I hope that the viewer who finishes seeing "The Funeral home" is mobilized, uncomfortable, with mixed feelings, with some scenes and moments that hopefully last in his retina and memory.
PC – O que podemos esperar da sua carreira num futuro próximo? Está a trabalhar em algo novo?/ What can we expect from you in a near future? Are you working on something new at the moment?
Mauro Iván Ojeda - Estou a trabalhar em dois projetos do género terror. Um no tom de "The Funeral Home" e o outro uma proposta totalmente diferente. Será um filme deterror de ficção científica. São dois projetos que me motivam muito para realizá-los.
I am working on two projects, horror genre. One within the tone of "The Funeral home", and the other a totally different proposal, horror with science fiction. They are two projects that have me very motivated to carry them out.
