PC – Em primeiro lugar gostaria que nos falasse um pouco sobre a sua experiência profissional, e porque é que decidiu embarcar numa carreira profissional na indústria cinematográfica? Quais são a suas inspirações e principais influências no setor?/First of all, tell us about your professional background, and why did you decided to embark on a professional career in the film industry? What are your inspirations and main influences in the industry?
Alix Angelis - Comecei no teatro e posso dizer que foi uma experiência incrivelmente enriquecedora. Após me licenciar na Experimental Theatre Wing na NYU fui contratada para um espetaculo que fez uma turnê internacional e acabou por ser comprada pela empresa Not Man Apart em Los Angeles, onde a indústria cinematográfica abriu uma ampla gama de oportunidades - E uma nova e maravilhosa forma de compartilhar as minhas próprias idéias por meio de projetos que comecei a escrever e realizar em nome próprio.
Acho que sou fortemente influenciada por artistas que exploram os detalhes dos relacionamentos e a magia do mundano. Artistas que ressoaram comigo nesse campo são Jay e Mark Duplass, Rachel Bloom, Bronwyn Cornelius e Alex Lehmann. I started out in theatre which was an incredibly enriching experience. Directly following graduating from Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU, I was cast in a show that toured internationally and landed with the company, Not Man Apart in Los Angeles where the film industry opened up a broader range of opportunities - AND a wonderful new way of sharing my own ideas through projects I began writing and directing myself.
I think I am strongly influenced by artists that explore the nitty gritty of relationships and the magic in the mundane. Artists that have resonated with me in those regards are Jay and Mark Duplass, Rachel Bloom, Bronwyn Cornelius, and Alex Lehmann. In terms of fellow actors, I tend to be inspired by people that choose those kinds of projects AND actively use their platforms for good. Brandon Kyle Goodman, Brie Larson, and Alfre Woodard come to mind.
PC - Olhando para trás, para a sua carreira promissora, demonstrou até agora uma grande aptidão para um trabalho de representação versátil em filmes e séries em diferentes géneros. Pode-nos contar um pouco sobre o que a leva a aceitar umprojeto?/ Looking back at your promising career so far you’ve shown a great aptitude for versatile acting work on Films and TV in different genres. Can you tell us a bit about what drives you to accept an offer?
Alix Angelis - Obrigado por referir a versatilidade. Acho que qualquer ator gostaria de ouvir isso! Acho que isso realmente diz mutio sobre as minhas escolhas. Eu levo em consideração o quão diferente uma personagem é dos outros que eu interpretei. Os papéis em que sinto que posso ir a algum lugar novo esticar-me um pouco acabam por me emocionar. Sempre disse antes que gosto de interpretar personagens que são um pouco fora do comum porque me sinto especialmente capacitada para descobrir e fazer o inesperado.
Thank you for saying that about versatility. I think that any actor would like to hear that! I think that actually informs my choices. I take into account how different a character is to other ones I have played. The roles where it feels like I can go somewhere new and stretch out a bit excite me. I've said before that I like playing characters that are a bit off-kilter because I feel especially empowered to discover and do the unexpected.
PC - Um do seus primeiros destaques na Indústria Cinematográfica foi o seu incrÃvel trabalho no curta “An Engagement”, em 2012, pelo qual recebeu o prémio de Melhor Atriz no Festival de Cinema de Malibu. O que nos pode contar sobre essa experiência e como é que ela acabou por influenciar a sua carreira?/ One of your first highlights in the Film Industry was your amazing work in the short “An Engagement”, in 2012, for which you received a "Best Actress" award at the Malibu Film Festival. What can you tell us about that experience and how it ended up influencing your career?
Alix Angelis - Este foi um filme especial porque foi o primeiro filme que escrevi. Então, ser reconhecida pela minha atiação além da recepção positiva do próprio filme foi um grande incentivo. Foi definitivamente um marco na minha carreira porque provou a mim própria que era possÃvel ser cineasta para além de performer. Também aprofundou o meu apreço por cada departamento da produção de um filme, vendo-o de um novo ângulo. Esta foi uma grande porta de entrada e eu tive a felicidade e a sorte de escrever e dirigir vários outros projetos desde então.
That was a special film because it was the first film that I wrote. Then, to be acknowledged for my performance on top of the positive reception of the film itself was such an encouragement. It was definitely a milestone in my career because it proved to myself that it was possible to be a filmmaker as well as a performer. It also deepened my appreciation for every department of a film production, seeing it from a new angle. That was a huge gateway and I have been delighted and fortunate enough to write and direct several more projects since then.
PC – Desde então fez parte de várias produções cinematográficas importantes, mas provavelmente a maior foi o blockbuster / remake "The Magnificent Seven". Como descreve essa experiência cinematográfica e como se envolveu no projeto?/ Since then you’ve been a part of several important movie productions, but probably the biggest was the blockbuster /remake “The Magnificent Seven”. How do you describe that film experience and how did you get involved in the project?
Alix Angelis - Envolvi-me ao enviar um video pro inciativa própria! Foi muito louco porque a personagem foi uma adição de última hora ao enredo. O diretor, Antoine Fuqua, queria criar alguém que representasse a inocência na cidade ameaçada. Então eu enviei minha audição e três dias depois estava em um avião para Louisiana para três meses de filmagem. A experiência foi incrÃvel de muitas maneiras. Estava incrivelmente quente e húmido (especialmente usando lã da cabeça aos pés). Mas o melhor de tudo é que me senti uma colaboradora entre lendas. E isto curou grande parte do meu sÃndrome do impostor e deu-me aquela sensação de pertencer à indústria.
I got involved through sending in a self tape! It was pretty wild because the character was a last minute addition to the script. The director, Antoine Fuqua wanted to create someone who represented innocence in the endangered town. So I sent in my tape and three days later I was on a plane to Louisiana for 3 months of shooting. The experience was incredible in so many ways. It was incredibly hot and humid (especially wearing head-to-toe wool and a petticoat.). But the best part about it was that I felt like a collaborator amongst legends. It cured a great deal of my impostor syndrome, and gave me a sense of belonging in the industry.
PC - O seu último trabalho é o filme de terror “The Cleansing Hour” que foi exibido no ano passado no Festival de Cinema de Sitges em Espanha e no Fantastic Fest nos EUA, dois marcos da indústria de festivais de cinema! É um filme muito curioso que joga entre os mundos da tecnologia / redes soiaise o paranormal. Como se envolveu neste projeto?/ Your latest work is the horror film “The Cleansing Hour” that was showcased last year at Sitges Film Festival in Spain and in Fantastic Fest in the USA, two hallmarks of the movie festival industry! It’s a very curious film that plays between the worlds of technology/social media and the paranormal. How did you got involved in this project?
Alix Angelis - Foi também uma abordagem bastante tradicional. Enviei um video de casting e descobri depois com o diretor, Damien LeVeck, que a minha atuação foi exatamente como ele imaginou a personagem. Lembro-me de quando gravei a audição, o meu marido e eu assistimos novamente ao video e ficamos arrepiados! Então disse: "envie isso!" Foi muito divertido interpretar uma personagem que sai das paredes. Os meus colegas de elenco, Kyle Gallner e Ryan Guzman, foram maravilhosos, quer no trabalho, quer no convivio na Roménia! E a equipa de Design de Produção incrivelmente talentosa e o Departamento de Maquilhagem de Efeitos Especiais chefiados por Lauren Slatten e Adam Dougherty, respectivamente, fizeram com que entrar naquele mundo parecesse quase sem esforço.
This was also a pretty traditional route. I sent in a tape and I found out later from the director, Damien LeVeck, that my performance was just how he imagined the character. I remember when I taped the audition, my husband and I watched it back and we got chills! So I said, "send that!" It was really fun to perform a character that goes off the walls. My cast mates, Kyle Gallner and Ryan Guzman were wonderful to work with and hang out with in Romania! And the amazingly talented Production Design team and Special Effects Makeup Department headed by Lauren Slatten and Adam Dougherty respectively, made going into that world feel almost effortless.
PC РO filme parece ter exigido muito dos seus atores. Quais foram os principais desafios que enfrentou durante a prodṳ̣o? E como foi trabalhar com o cineasta Damien LeVeck?/ The film appears to have demanded a lot from its actors. What were the main challenges you faced during the production? And how was working with director Damien LeVeck?
Alix Angelis - Foi um desafio interpretar uma personagem que passou maior parte do filme sentada numa cadeira. Foi um desafio apresentar uma atuação dinâmica. Damien e eu conversamos muito sobre a fisicalidade do demónio, então ele realmente apareceu, embora eu estivesse amarrada. Ele sugeriu muitas imagens realmente úteis, como "galhos retorcidos de árvores crescendo através dos meus músculos". Foi uma delÃcia trabalhar com ele, porque ele genuinamente AMA este género e estava tão emocionado por estar contando essa história.
It was a challenge to play a character from the confines of a chair for most of the film and have the performance be dynamic. Damien and I talked a lot about the physicality of the demon so that it really came through even though I was tied up. He suggested a lot of really helpful imagery like "gnarled branches of trees growing through my muscles." He was a delight to work with because he genuinely LOVES this genre and was so thrilled to be telling this story.
PC - O que se segue na sua carreira? O que podemos esperarde si no futuro?/ What’s next for your career? What can we expect from Alix Angelis in the near future?
Alix Angelis - Tenho vários projetos em andamento, aproveitando vários cargos digamos assim. Mas agora estou mais animada para dirigir um longa-metragem baseada mum curta que escrevi / realizei e qie atualmente está no circuito de festivais. Chama-se "Seance-ing" e é uma história nostálgica perto do meu coração sobre três melhores amigas de treze anos no final dos anos 90 que foram traÃdos pela sua boyband favorita. Foi um sonho realizá-la e mal posso esperar para contar toda a história.
I have multiple projects in the works wearing various hats. But right now I'm most excited about directing a feature film based on a short film I wrote/directed currently on the festival circuit. It's called "Seance-ing," a nostalgic story close to my heart about three thirteen year old best friends in the late 90s who are betrayed by their favorite boyband. It was a dream to make and I can't wait to share the full story.
